Pieces From The Past Featuring The Lititz Historical Foundation (Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese) Pieces From The Past continues this week, featuring the Lititz Historical Foundation. In this weekly article, Shopping News readers will learn about local items housed in local museums and historical societies.... The picture shows an 18th century tape loom. At that time, tape referred to a long woven strap that had a variety of uses such as carrying a bag over one’s shoulder, tying an apron, or decorating a hat. The Johannes Mueller House has examples of tapes used to secure a baby in a high chair at the dining table and in a cradle. The loom operates entirely by hand and is relatively easy to set up. The weaver determines the length and width desired for the tape and measures the thread or yarn accordingly. The warp (white yarn in the picture) is held with a ratchet and ball in the rear of the loom (to the right in this picture) and is threaded alternately through the holes or slats in the wood. The weft or cross thread (orange in the picture) is attached to a shuttle. The weaver ties the warp and weft into a knot at the working end and uses the shuttle to go back and forth as she weaves. She maintains tension by hand. After each pass, she tightens the weft, and then moves the warp up or down for the next weave. There were different styles of tape looms. This is a box loom, designed to sit on a table. It differs from some other styles because it has a ratchet mechanism at both ends, the one on the left to hold the completed tape. Families throughout the colonies used tape looms, and in many households, tape weaving was one of the tasks give to young children. You can see this loom and the tapes at the Lititz Museum and the Johannes Mueller House through October. The Lititz Museum and Johannes Mueller House are located at 137-145 East Main Street, Lititz. The Museum and Gift shop are open in October from Wednesday through Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours of the Mueller House are available for a fee and tours are limited in size. You may telephone the museum at 717-627-4636 for additional information. They also ask that visitors follow CDC guidelines and wear a mask in the museum. The floors are also marked to aid social distancing. Free parking is available curbside along Main Street in front of the Museum and behind the Museum in marked parking lots.

SMILEIt’s In Style Message Encourages All To Stay Positive (Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese) Children attending this one room school just outside Terre Hill spent their recess time to create an uplifting message that everyone traveling Route 897 can see and appreciate. The chain link fence provides the canvas and Mother Nature’s fallen leaves supply the fill for the letters of the message. Dried up leaves are tightly packed into the fence, and little by little the message begins to take shape with the help of many small hands and lots of dedication. These things which seem so simple can change a person’s day from one of being negative to one of positivity. Thank you Linden Grove kids for your gesture of kindness.

7th Annual Jan's Daisy Dash 5K Run/Walk Is A Cause Worth Supporting (Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese) Please join in for the 7th Annual Jan’s Daisy Dash in support of Jan’s Circle of Friends.... Shown in the photo, from left to right, are Melia VanZant with her running shoes, Tia Stauffer and Erin Hostetter standing with an event poster at Cocalico Stadium where registration takes place. Jan’s Circle of Friends is a non-profit organization that provides assistance to children affected by domestic violence and parental loss. The pain of experiencing domestic violence or losing a parent due to death or incarceration is devastating to a child and will change their life forever. But, change itself is neither good nor bad, it is how the child is cared for that will make them survivors or victims. Jan’s Circle of Friends was founded with the purpose to take action and provide funds for programs that help make survivors out of victims. Jan’s Daisy Dash 5K Run/Walk is one of the fundraisers they have to help benefit children of domestic violence. They understand it’s been a very tough year for everyone due to the pandemic, however, the organization has an amazing community that is standing behind them with sponsorships and donations. They cannot thank them enough. They will be requiring masks and social distancing; however, masks will not be required during the run/walk portion of this event. Please consider joining them for the Daisy Dash 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, October 31. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. and the Run/Walk begins at 9:00 a.m. at the Cocalico Stadium in Denver. You can also register online at www.janscircleoffriends.org. They cannot wait to see you all there.
