Today’s holiday recipe was shared by one of our fabulous travel advisors, Laurie Z. Enjoy! Vanilla Orange Candied Cranberries Ingredients ... * 3 3/4 cups sugar, divided * 1 3/4 cups water * 1 teaspoon vanilla extract * 2 teaspoons orange extract or Grand Marnier * 12 ounces fresh cranberries (1 bag) about 3 cups Instructions 1. Combine 2 1/2 cups of sugar, water, vanilla, and orange extract in a sauce pan. Heat over medium until the sugar has completely dissolved, but not boiling. 2. Pour in the cranberries and stir. The hot syrup will loosen the skin, saturate the berries, and adhere to the berries over time. Cover the cranberries with a small plate to keep them mostly submerged. Then cover the pan and place it in the refrigerator over night. 3. Place the remaining 1 1/4 cup of sugar in a rimmed dish. Strain the cranberries and place them in the sugar. Shake until they are completely coated. Carefully transfer them to a baking sheet to dry, about an hour. 4. Once the sugar coating is hard, place them in an air-tight container and keep in a cool spot for up to a week. A Christmas Story A Christmas Story follows the reality and imagination of Ralphie, a young boy navigating life during the holidays. We get a kids perspective on school, family dynamics, friendship, language, and the art of subtle hints. This holiday classic was released in theaters on November 18, 1983. The voice over of an older Ralphie was Jean Sheppard, the author of whose semi-fictional anecdotes inspired the script. Since 1997, TBS has aired the movie as a 24-hour ...marathon starting on Christmas Eve. TIP: Department Store Santa may not like the smell of tapioca. https://youtu.be/QwGYfMVKQtQ

How the Grinch Stole Christmas! by Dr. Seuss In May of 1955, Dr. Seuss published a 33-line poem in Redbook magazine titled, The Hoobub and the Grinch. Building off of the success from Cat in the Hat, Seuss then wrote and published the holiday classic we’ve all come to know as How the Grinch Stole Christmas! in 1957. The lyrical storylines follow a jaded individual, known as the Grinch, as the village he looks down on prepares for Christmas. As his plot to ruin Chris...tmas for Whoville by stealing the physical reminders of the season, he realizes that the spirit of Christmas, an intangible, is what Christmas is truly about. On Dec. 18, 1966, the animated feature of the book aired on TV. To this day, both the book and short film classic have become staples in many households during the holiday season. https://youtu.be/lvneGep9TPo

FOLKLORE According to European folklore, evergreen plants such as holly, ivy, mistletoe, and pine are symbolic elements of the winter solstice. Mistletoe represents peace while pine and holly offer protection. In general, evergreens represent eternal life due to its forever green appearance. Today, we use these items in our holiday decorations, sing songs about them, and add them to our landscape to have year-round color.
