Today, June 19, is Juneteenth. This post, from Environmental Working Group, explains a bit about the day and highlights some organizations working towards environmental and racial justice. We encourage you to read about and act on this work - and we'll do the same.

It's our 15th Anniversary! On the 15th of each month, we're taking a look back at some of our biggest milestones. In 2014, we worked with then-4th graders at Environmental Charter School Pittsburgh and Dar Hosta James, Artist to create a children's book titled If We Were To Plant A Tree. Hear the book read aloud, accompanied by the art created with the students!

As you take time to reflect on the work of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the work still to be done, consider how his work paved the way for the environmental justice movement - particularly how segregated neighborhoods have higher levels of pollution. Note: this story was published in April of 2018, but the points are still relevant today.

A little #fbf that is still relevant today: how we process seeds for our Heritage Nursery!

Last week we planted 50 trees along the Eliza Furnace Trail thanks to our partner Dynegy. This planting is one of several supported by Dynegy across the City of Pittsburgh in 2020 and 2021, totaling 300 trees. To show their dedication and commitment to Pittsburgh's urban tree canopy, they've committed to supporting the planting of another 500 trees! In addition to the 50 trees from Dynegy, we planted over 150 trees and shrubs along the trail thanks to the Allegheny County Health Department. As you enjoy the Eliza Furnace Trail, take in the beautiful sight of newly planted trees!

These are some record high temps! If you have a newly-planted tree or a tree that's still green, it needs to be watered. Give your tree 10 gallons of water for every 1 inch of trunk diameter.

Be like Ludi! If you see spotted lanternfly, crush it - then report it. Great job, Ludi!

More nature for your timelines. This is a shagbark hickory (yellow) and a blackgum (red). The blackgum was captured on our campus on the Allegheny River. Feel free to share the nature you've seen below!
