The Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod invites you to commemorate the Emanuel Nine, martyrs (Thursday, June 17) with a video service now available on the Synod’s Y...ouTube and Facebook channels. The service, led by Bishop Davenport and Synod staff, is suitable to be shared as a congregational event or for individual use. Download the bulletin: https://ministrylink.org//06/Emanuel-Nine-Bulletin-2021.pdf They were doing what we are called to as they engaged in bible study. It was Wednesday night a stranger walked in, and these people welcomed him and prayed together: the Rev. Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, Cynthia Marie Graham Hurd, Susie Jackson, Ethel Lee Lance, the Rev. DePayne Middleton-Doctor, Tywanza Kibwe Diop Sanders, the Rev. Daniel Lee Simmons, the Rev. Myra Singleton Quarles Thompson, and the honorable state senator and pastor of the church, the Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney. This stranger wanted to ignite a race war, he said, after he shot and killed them, denying them the very humanity he claimed for himself, claiming rights and privileges associated with whiteness. Now we are grieved, once again in pain, burning and anguished, lamenting the horror of evil unleashed. And so we cry out, Have mercy, O God, have mercy on us. O Holy Blessed One, we acknowledge before you that the treatment accorded the Jewish people on the part of Christian believers has been a tragic development in ...the long history of Christianity. This includes the horrors of the Holocaust of the twentieth century in places where Lutheran churches were strongly represented. With deep and abiding sorrow, we confess before you and one another, that we have too often been silent before, or complicit in, the sad contagion of anti-Semitism which continues to this day. O Maker and Keeper of us all, reform our faith and our living to reflect more boldly your endless mercy. -A Litany of Confession based on the "Declaration of ELCA to the Jewish Community"
"And I won't rest; I will face intimidation, and everything else, along with these other stalwart fighters for democracy and for citizenship. We don't mind it, ...so long as justice comes out of it." -Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929. We celebrate Martin Luther King (MLK) Day on Monday, January 18, the federal holiday that honors his life and legacy. #MLKDay #MartinLutherKingJr
Today we commemorate the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who wrote, The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.
