Tug Jupiter 16.07.2021

A sad day today in the Historic Tug World. The Tug Pegasus, the last of Jupiter's sisters from her days as Standard Oil Co Of NY 14 has gone to the scrap yards. With the loss of Jupiter's Independent Pier Co sister Saturn last year and now Pegasus, our old girl Jupiter now somberly stands alone as the last of her two historic lineages.

As we all hope you are staying safe during this winter storm, we look back 7 years ago, where a combination of frigid weather and extreme tides left Jupiter and tons of ice bottomed out. Please stay safe out there! #philadelphia #winterstorm

Hey Philadelphia Eagles, we're a grizzled veteran who wears green and has 118 years of experience pushing and shoving, gives us a call and we'll motor over to the Linc. #gobirds #protectwentz

Thanks to all of our fans for 1500 likes. We appreciate your continued support of Jupiter and her restoration and operation. Here we see Jupiter recently, sporting her newly cleaned and painted hull after her dry-docking. The crew of Jupiter also wish everyone good health throughout the COVID-19 event, and we look forward to seeing you back at Penn's Landing when things return to normal.

6 years ago this week, a combination of frigid temperatures, extreme tides, and heavy wind sucked all the water out of the basin where Jupiter formerly docked. This left her high and dry on a plateau of ice and mud!

30 years ago today, on Sunday November 19th 1989, after 87 years of active service in New York City, Philadelphia, and Boston, Jupiter was escorted to her new semi-retirement home of Penn's Landing, where she has resided ever since. Escorting her home were the Tugs BART TURECAMO and CAPE COD which are still working in Philadelphia, as well as the REEDY POINT, which was scrapped after sinking during a ship docking in 1999. Enjoy the article below, and here's to the next 30 years!

Using brains rather than brawn! Volunteers repositioned Jupiter this weekend so that the stern faces downriver rather than upriver to protect the rudder from winter ice. We just cast off all except the stern line and let tidal action do all the work!

It's been a long time since you've heard from us. For that we are sorry. But in the interm, we'd like to hear from you! Comment your questions about Jupiter, or maybe a story you have about her! As always, thanks for your continued support!

Don't forget to buy your tickets for front row seats to the Penn's Landing Fireworks. Watch from dockside aboard Jupiter's sister ship, Gazela. Enjoy clean restrooms and tours of Gazela!

This year on #GivingTuesday, we hope that you will consider a gift to help support Jupiter. Jupiter is in much better condition following her Summer drydocking, but more work is needed on her railings and deck before she will be able to participate in public events again. We are currently working hard to raise $86,000 to fund our business plan in 2019. This plan involves hiring staff and outside consultants to help us run educational programming in schools in and around the ...Philadelphia area, reach more volunteers, host more paid events onboard Gazela, and work on our capital campaigns, among other activities all of which will ultimately bring more fund and volunteers to PSPG. So far, we have been able to raise enough funds and pledges to hire a part time education coordinator to work on school programing, scheduled to start soon. We expect this position to become self-sustaining in a little over year. Please consider a donation to PSPG to help build a more robust organization that will be to provide continuous community programming and to ensure a long life for our ships #GivingTuesday

Jupiter came home to Penn's Landing today under her own power. Many thanks to all of the volunteers who came out to help save her engine after the initial intake of water, those who helped with the drydocking, those who donated, and those who supported. Help is still needed to get 100% of her systems back online so we can heat her before we hit freezing temps! Re-flooding the dock this morning!

Tug Jupiter 08.07.2020

Jupiter has been patched, painted (at least the hull), and her refloating has been scheduled for next Thursday the 8th. It's still an open question whether she will come back to the Landing under her own power or be towed, depending on the availability of an engineer. Either way, there will be much to be done to get her out of the dock and situated for the winter, so if you are available to help, contact [email protected]. The timing is difficult to predict, but it's reas...onable to expect things to be happening at the shipyard by 0800. Looking ahead, there is urgent work to be done on the tug. Several radiators in the engine room had to be unmounted to access the hull, and they must be reinstalled to get the heat on for the winter. Jupiter's systems cannot be winterized, so the heating system must be on before the weather turns cold. Also, this drydocking focused on the hull, and has left the rest of the boat in some disarray (as yard periods do), so there is a good deal of cleanup to be done over this winter. Come give your favorite tugboat some loving this winter.
