A Philly BLT - Hoagie Style. Fresh baked hokkaido hoagie roll, @primalsupplymeats bacon, @riverwardsproduce heirloom tomatoes, arugula, and baconaise (bacon drippings, eggs, white wine vinegar, paprika, garlic). #tulipstreetkitchen
On National Avocado Day, we’re celebrating the Avocado and the Avocado-like Black Rain Frog with a B.L.A.T. Hokkaido Milk Bread, Mashed Avocado, Cider Vinegar Mayo, Bacon, Arugula, Charred Tomato Business #tulipstreetkitchen #animalbread
For June, our featured Animal of the Month was well... @grittynhl. For those that haven’t had the pleasure of his aquaintance yet, Gritty is the @philadelphiaflyers friendly, bright orange mascot with truly terrifying eyes and some pretty sweet memes. While he may not technically be an animal, what can we say? The world is a little weird right now and Gritty was just the weirdo animal we wanted to celebrate, nay, the animal we deserve. His signature colors (and general attitu...de) are reflected in this month’s Animal Bread selections: The Phlavors of Philadelphia. Gritty Amaranth-coated Sourdough Boule and Roasted Orange Bell Pepper Romesco Sauce with Fresh Mozzarella, Carrot, & Black Sesame Paste for eyes Orange Cheddar Pretzels with Black & White Sea Salt and Sharp Cheddar Whiz featuring Kenzinger from @philadelphiabrewing And because you know Gritty would be all about a pan full of flaming sugar (and watching the world burn), Navel Orange Sourdough Crêpes Suzette to finish #animalbread #tulipstreetkitchen
Bake it, boil it, fry it. The possibilities with Pâte à Choux are endless.
In celebration of our second favorite cephalopod, Billy the Squid takes top billing, we present Black Barley & Local Orange Yam Whole Wheat Sourdough paired with homemade Cultured Butter (because it goes to the opera). How does this relate to a cuttlefish? The two ws in Whole Wheat represent the w-like slits in the cuttlefish’s eyes. But really, it’s Halloween and we have a smoking hot pumpkin of a bread for you.
We took inspiration from the adorable Red Panda’s coloring for July’s #animalbread feast. Here we have what we’re referring to as Pan de Panda. A Toasted Garlic Sourdough Naan coupled with homemade Chicken Tikka Masala.
For the most adorable of Little Blue Penguins, we’re celebrating March’s #AnimalBread with a blue-hued Pain Au Myrtille (aka Blueberry Viennoiserie).
Happy #piday2019! We’re celebrating our favorite irrational number with this Mango Tart, topped with Torched Swiss Meringue, Diced Creme Brûlée, and Lime Zest.
Tulip Street Kitchen’s first foray into fondant work for the Fishtown Beer Runners 11th anniversary. Vanilla & Chocolate Cake baked with Philadelphia Brewing Co. Shackamaximum Stout with layers of Peanut Butter Caramel, White Chocolate Namelaka, and Dark Chocolate Custard in between. Thanks to Man About Cake for the inspiration and Weckerly's Ice Cream for kitchen space.
For November’s #animalbread, we celebrate the Death’s Head Hawkmoth, Acherontia Styx, with the Bienenstich or Bee Sting Cake. Bee Sting Cake is a German yeasted cake with a cream filling, in this case a maple whipped cream, and a honey almond topping that according to legend attracted a bee that stung the cake’s first baker. Another legend sources the cake’s origin to 15th century bakers who threw beehives at would-be raiders from a neighboring village, repelling them, and celebrated by making this cake. The death’s head hawkmoth can mimic the scent of bee’s to raid beehives and have an epipharynx that both sucks up honey and emits a squeak to deter predators. #tulipstreetkitchen
In honor of Tulip Street Kitchen’s first trip to France, Grolar Bear Bread is the super French-inspired Pain au Portmanteau. Croissant Spirals filled with Vanilla Custard, Pistachios, and Craisins. They’re also half white and half brown, just like the mighty Grolar Bear. #animalbread #grolarbear #tulipstreetkitchen #tulipsweetkitchen
Liberté! Égalité! Fraternité! In honor of Bastille Day, we’re serving up this beautiful boule with a surprise. This slow fermented (48 hour) sourdough is colored with blue pea flower tea (the clitoria flower to be exact) giving it a regal French Blue interior. Thanks to Carl Linnaeus’s dual fascinations with sex and botany for this striking flower’s unusual name. Since we’re playing catch up, this is also Animal of the Month Bread (for June... oops!) June’s animal is t...he leisurely Sloth! Get it, slow-fermenting bread. While the sloth is known for it’s slow-moving ways, it’s mating habits are uncharacteristically speedy and intercourse can take as little as 5 seconds, soup to nuts. #tulipstreetkitchen #animalbread #slothbread
