Some folks will try to hire a less experienced or cheaper contractor, but in our decades of experience, we;ve seen over and over again how the homeowner will ALWAYS make out better by going to these methods to save some dough: - get locally sourced boulders. A lot of the cost in boulders is the trucking and transport. ... - hire an experienced contractor for the parts you can't do that require experience, skill, and equipment. - then do the grunt work yourself, such as the planting, mulching, grass seed, etc. Unfortunately, many times we've helped out unfortunate homeowners that did not follow that advice above, and til the story was told, they endured massive amounts of frustration, wasted money, and ended up spending far more to have us come in and fix it up. Granted, when we finished those projects up, everything was , but by this time the poor homeowner has spent far more than if they would have hired the "expensive" contractor in the beginning. This homeowner ALMOST did what I described above in hiring a cheap contractor with very little experience, but fortunately he listened to his gut and followed our advice. He'll now have a solid water feature for decades of enjoyment, all be it with slightly more sweat involved on his part, but I have a hunch that by this time he's completely forgotten the sweat, and only remembers the fantastic enjoyment. :) Cheers!
