Shahzia Sikander: Extraordinary Realities June 18 through September 26, 2021 Pakistani American artist Shahzia Sikander is internationally celebrated for bringing Indo-Persian manuscript-painting traditions into dialogue with contemporary art practice. This exhibition tracks the first fifteen years of this artistic journey, from her groundbreaking deconstruction of manuscript painting in Pakistan to the development of a new personal vocabulary at RISD, expanded explorations around identity as a Core fellow at the Glassell School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and her global outlook during her first years in New York. During this period, Sikander richly interrogated gender, sexuality, race, class, and history, creating open-ended narratives that have sustained her work as one of the most significant artists working today.

With fun, flair, and a heavy dose of fervor, @dolanchickaliya and @eliseanderson will teach you about the art and allure of hand-pulled noodles. Laghman is one of the most beloved Uyghur dishes crossing into multiple worlds and combining cultured delicacy with a bold attack on the palate. This event is part of The Contest in Context event series and presented by @hurfordcenter, @12gates @cairphilly. Event takes place on June 10 at 12PM EST. An invitation to narrate & translate. Email [email protected] to participate The Beetroot Robe May 7-August 14, 2021 Qasim Riza Shaheen... Twelve Gates Arts is delighted to welcome back Qasim Riza Shaheen for his second solo show, The Beetroot Robe. In June 2012 we hosted Shaheen’s enchanting exhibition In a World Where There Are Five Women I Am the Seventh. This new body of work emblematically centers around another myth-like story. It takes us on a journey through colors, characters and codes. Shaheen renders multiple translations of The Beetroot Robe in several languages, drawing attention to the nuances of interpretation and vocal rhythms of the narrator. The works are ceremonious, part of an imagined future, part remembrance of the past. The preparatory and shard-like visual narratives remind us of Shaheen's trajectory, his consistent exploration of unions between ambiguity and mystique. In this show Shaheen’s posed portraits look back at the viewer, invoking the power of retrospect to elucidate the process of longing and aging.

Just a little over a week until our Contest in Context: Noodlin' Around program at Noon on Thursday, June 10th. For this event we're incredibly excited to welcome @eliseanderson and @dolanchickaliya who we are featuring today. Aliya (aka Dolan Chick) is a Uyghur woman who first studied and now lives and works in Europe. Her love for traditional Uyghur food inspires her to share it with as many people as possible. She started with a YouTube channel where she shares her experie...nce and knowledge on this ''obscure'' but delicious cuisine and has also created a food blog where she makes Uyghur cuisine as easy and accessible as possible while showing the food at its best through beautiful photography. If that wasn't enough, she recently started cooking live online with others; reaching more people on a more personal level. Currently she is researching and working on her first Uyghur cookbook. To learn more about Uyghur cuisine and the secrets to successful Laghman, Uyghur hand-pulled noodles, RSVP for our June 10th event at bit.ly/noodlinaround The Contest of the Fruits and Contest in Context series are created in collaboration with @slavsandtatars, @12gates, and CAIR-Philadelphia and are supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage (@pewcenterarts
