BEANS BEANS BEANS We picked snap beans this morning. They are available at the farm stand.
Weekend update. Everything is growing rapidly. The first sweet corn has tassels. We started picking cabbage this week. But on a sad note, we are out of strawberries. The zucchini is coming in like gangbusters. This week we got all the potatoes cultivated and the early varieties hilled (mound soil around the plants). Today I got help checking the crops. Hadley said the potatoes and sweet corn look great. There are so many vegetables currently blooming I had to include a lot of pictures. We wish all the fathers a happy Father’s Day. Until next week have a safe and happy week.
Weekend update. The heat is on. Remember, corn loves heat as long as there is enough moisture in the ground. We will see how much it grows this week. The biggest news is the first potatoes are blooming. The other news is we finished planting soybeans today. Monday, we seeded our storage cabbage. As I posted this morning, Steven picked the first red beets of the season to go with the lettuce, radishes, scullions, kale, spinach, cauliflower, cucumbers, and strawberries at the farm stand. It looks like we might add broccoli soon. Watch for future posts. Until next week stay cool, safe, and healthy.
HAPPY FATHER'S DAY! On behalf of our farm families to all of yours, may this Father's Day be filled with love, laughter, and plates heaped high with Dad's favourite, PEI Potatoes.
Steven picked red beets this morning. They are available at the farm stand.
At the farm stand we have the basics for a cool fresh garden salad; lettuce, onions, radishes, cucumbers, and if you want to be creative, cauliflower. And don't forget strawberry shortcake for dessert.
ZUCCHINI We picked zucchini today. They are available at the farm stand.
Weekend update. It has been a relatively slow week. With us being caught up with planting, enough moisture in the ground, and ideal temperatures everything is looking great. We transplanted another batch of cabbage, lettuce, and scullions. We cultivated all our early varieties of potatoes. We also side dressed some sweet corn. We still had time to start dismantling a tractor to repair a hydraulic line that’s leaking. The farm stand will be open all week. We have cauliflower, broccoli, kohlrabi, cucumbers, lettuce, radishes, scullions, red beets, kale, and we still have some strawberries. Until next week, stay safe and healthy.
Travis picked some broccoli this morning to go along with the cauliflower, strawberries, cucumbers, lettuce, radishes, scullions, spinach, and kale. These are all available at the farm stand from 9:00AM to 5:00PM daily.
A friend of mine was researching Pennsylvania Potato Cooperative’s history with the Pennsylvania Farm Show. He learned that in 1952 the Farm Show sold it’s 1 millionth baked potato. While fact checking, he found a magazine confirming this story. The same magazine had an article about the then Senator Richard M Nixon giving a speech to the Pennsylvania potato growers at the Farm Show. This same magazine also had a story about Twin Maple Farms. This is a copy of the article. Earl was my grandfather and Ray was my father. Enjoy the article and until next week, stay safe and healthy.
Instead of weekend updates I’m publishing a series of rayisms. Rayisms are sayings, jokes, or antidotes I learned from my father Ray. Some were original and others he heard elsewhere and repeated. I will try to explain where they came from and how he used them.

Weekend update. This Tuesday and Wednesday we picked our storage cabbage before Thursday morning's hard freeze. The rest of the week was spent packing and delivering potatoes in the mornings and harvesting soybean in the afternoons. If you are still planning your Thanksgiving dinner, we have plenty potatoes, brussel sprouts, cabbage, red beets, and more. Until next week, stay safe and have a happy Thanksgiving.
I haven’t been doing weekend updates because this time of the year at Twin Maple Farms our time is spent mostly just packing and delivering potatoes and cabbage. This week we received an order for a trailer load of potatoes. It’s not unusual for us to pack a trailer load, but this is the first time we ever packed a whole load of 5 lb. bags. Our farm stand is still open. We have potatoes (white, Lehigh Gold, and red), cabbage, and red beets.
Weekend update(2 days late). We finished Harvesting potatoes on Thursday. The potatoes are safely piled in the storage. We started picking our late crop of snap beans today. We have plenty green and yellow beans at the farm. We also have a good supplies of cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, red beets, potatoes, and more.

Weekend update. FROST! We had our first killing frost last night. Since we were forewarned, we picked vegetables that we were afraid would freeze like zucchini, eggplant and peppers. Then we covered the snap beans that I planted late. The are almost ready to pick. It would be a shame for them to freeze now. The peppers we picked are safe in the cooler and the cover worked great. As you can see in one photo, the beans survived. You can also see that red beets, cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower were not affected by last night’s frost. On another note, we have been harvesting our storage potatoes. We are digging potatoes again tomorrow and keep going until they are all out of the ground. Until next week, stay safe.
Weekend update. After last week's post, where I listed everything we were still picking I had a scare when we had 3 frosty mornings. To my surprise most vegetables survived. It looks like only zucchini and cucumbers got burned. For everyone that was waiting for Lehigh Gold potatoes, they are now available at the farm. We dug some on Monday and the crop looks good. We also have some brussel sprouts in the stand. If you remember, back in August I planted some snap beans and red beets. As you can see, the beans are blooming and the beets are looking good. The soil is dry and we could use some rain. So, until next week stay safe.
