We always talk about how planks in general are far more advanced for clients than the average trainer or person gives them credit for. This is a good variation for working into the plank without having to hold with poor form for long periods of time. It is also a good frontal and transverse plane pelvic control exercise, which is a weak point for a lot of people as well.

There are a lot of noteworthy aspects of this exercise. A lot of times... 1) People tend to think that exercises done on the floor means they are easy, which is usually because they are performing them incorrectly or dont know how to "load" them appropriately.... 2) People tend to think the core is just the front or the "six pack" area. And then they evolve to thinking it is the front and the sides. But often ignored is the back or backside of the core, which is often a key contributor and sometimes sole contributor to lower back issues/pain. 3) During exercises people overuse their lower backs because one, all or a combination of the core, lats and glutes arent strong enough and the lower back takes the brunt of it. This exercise ties all three of those into one by connecting them together so they have to activate. And the last piece we will mention here about this exercise, is it is a challenging and effective one and also one that demonstrates that there is far more to making exercises harder than simply continuously add weight to them.

Bent Over One Arm Kettlebell Row + Lat Engaged One Arm Lateral Band Bent over rowing variations are one of those types of exercises that people see as beginner exercises and are not. The ability to hinge / get into that position itself, the stability to actually hold that position and then actually do the movement itself add quite a bit of complexity. Using only one arm instead of both increases that challenge even further.... This exercise is a good example of using a load/weight in order to assist the pattern and make the exercise more effective. Holding the band out there activates muscles for stability that most people cannot do themselves as well as gives some "counter balance" in order to perform the row itself correctly.

When it comes to reaching goals, or in this case, not reaching goals or anything in the middle ,there is a big difference between taking accountability for the lack of success of that goal and it taking a negative effect to one's self esteem or self efficacy. This is an information dense set of clips from Episode 46 of the "Erie Fitness "Lifestyle" Podcast" that dives into just that. What we see a lot in clients is that when they have struggled, they reflect it as a negative ...quality onto themself rather than accepting it as a learning experience that doesnt mean anything to them as a person, just their knowledge. Self Esteem is one's evaluation or belief of their own worth. Self Efficacy is one's belief in their innate ability to achieve goals. These are very important in this context because when a person puts that emotional toll on themselves when they do not deserve it, the negative effects on reflections of their own self worth as well as their innate ability to achieve goals is challenged, threatened, thwarted, all of the above etc. And that makes everything harder, which of course we want to avoid.
