This week I’m sharing our collaboration with the talented designers from @tyler_hatchery ! The Hatchery is a design entrepreneurship program at @tylergaid @tyler_artandarchitecture, and I was invited to be a guest critic last semester. The design challenge was to create a Philly themed set of cards or art print for us to sell at Occasionette, and we are obsessed with the amazing job these illustrators did with the project.

When he spoke to @tylergaid last week, @daviddylanthomas, author of the new book "Design for Cognitive Bias" emphasized that there is no such thing as neutral design. MFA student Justine Kelley @justine.grape is showing this visually with non-neutral colors and interesting textures in her design. Did you see his talk or read the book? How have you seen biases in design?

The thesis of @zach.lieberman’s talk last week was ‘the computer is an illusion machine.’ One of our faculty, @jennybkowalski, was inspired by the way Zach played with the data that makes the images we see on screen. She converted the phrase "the computer is an illusion machine" to binary (the sequence of 1s and 0s in the background) and then converted that binary to hexadecimal. She turned the hexadecimal string into a sequence of 12 hexadecimal colors, and those are the colors in the background.

Wednesday 9/16 Zach Lieberman @zach.lieberman is coming to GAID (virtually)! He's giving a talk for Temple Contemporary at 6pm. OPEN TO ALL! Register for free, link in our bio linktr.ee/TylerGAID. Plus GAID students can attend 2 BONUS EVENTS: an informal Q&A at 11am and a Coding Workshop at 3pm. GAID students: find the Zoom links on Canvas! Zachary Lieber...man is an artist, researcher, and educator with a simple goal: he wants you surprised. In his work, he creates performances and installations that take human gesture as input and amplify them in different ways -- making drawings come to life, imagining what the voice might look like if we could see it, transforming people's silhouettes into music. He's been listed as one of Fast Company's Most Creative People and his projects have won the Golden Nica from Ars Electronica, Interactive Design of the Year from Design Museum London as well as listed in Time Magazine's Best Inventions of the Year. He creates artwork through writing software and is a co-creator of openFrameworks, an open source C++ toolkit for creative coding and helped co-found and teaches at the School for Poetic Computation, a school examining the lyrical possibilities of code. He’s also a professor at MIT’s Media Lab, where he runs the Future Sketches group. #tylergaid #tylerschoolofartandarchitecture @temple_contemp
