Unity Recovery 18.12.2020

Recently, we were made aware of the actions on the personal social media of one of our peer recovery support specialists. Almost two weeks ago, on an online conversation which began on another topic, this staff member made dismissive and derogatory comments to another individual, who unbeknownst to the staff was also a person in recovery. These actions were wholly out of line with our organization values and against our internal codes of conduction and social media usage poli...cies. As is standard practice, we immediately began an internal investigation on the matter to determine if an ethical code violation had occurred. Following this investigation, which results have been provided directly to the PCB, we determined that while the actions were in violation of our internal policies and standards, they were not a violation of the PCB code of ethics. As such, the employee in question has been placed on a collaborative coaching plan - a process which allows people to grow and learn from their mistakes, a hallmark of the recovery process and paradigm that we believe in at Unity. We believe in a process of transparency as an organization, and while we know that our community has asked us to comment on this matter sooner, we had a responsibility to investigate the matter in a comprehensive manner following strict protocols given the seriousness of the incident. It is never acceptable to use our words to diminish, stigmatize, and otherwise express bias against those in the recovery community or the process we all engage in to heal ourselves. We will do better. Our staff will do better. Thank you, Unity Recovery

We must stop using words like "substance abuse" and "substance abuser." People in recovery do not need punishment for "abusing" a substance. People in recovery need support, not stigma. https://actionnetwork.org/p/change-the-name-end-the-stigma

If you requested a mail ballot but have not received it yet, don’t worry, your vote can still be counted! In fact, you have multiple options for how to vote. Most Pennsylvania voters who did not receive their approved mail ballot can request a new one in person. Head to your county elections office or satellite voting center by Monday, November 2nd >> http://padems.com/counties If you're not able to claim a replacement ballot in person, you may still vote with a provisional b...allot on Election Day. To do so, please go to your assigned polling place and ask for a provisional ballot on November 3rd; the polls will be open 7 AM 8 PM >> https://bit.ly/3kJwUTO Thanks to PA Attorney General Josh Shapiro for the info!

We’re thrilled to support PRO-A’s leadership in recovery event this year. PRO-A continues to be one of our state’s most powerful assets in organizing the recovery community and ensuring community-based recovery support is available for all Pennsylvanians.

Many thanks to Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs for their support of our recovery support programming at Unity for the last 12 months! Through our grant, we were able to serve over 220,000 individuals in a combination of in person (pre COVID) and digital recovery support services! Our peer staff provides so many great recovery support services including recovery planning, recovery brief check-ins, warm hand off referrals, life skills workshops, recovery y...oga, pro-social activities, and all recovery meetings! Our services breakdown for the year: 1:1 Peer Services: 204 (unduplicated) In Vivo Mutual Aid Meetings: 956 Digital Mutual Aid Meetings: 216,791 Recovery Yoga: 1,330 Referrals: 103 Prosocial activities: 140 Life skills education: 466 Outreach/Training (# of events): 191 We served over 200,000 people in recovery meetings, and we couldn’t have done that without our national partners and some of the best RCOs around the country (s/o SOS, FFR, Alano Club of Portland, and WEconnect Health). We facilitated over 1,000 one on one engagements where participants completed 100s of recovery plan goals, including finding jobs, securing housing, moderating or stopping substance use, working through record expungement, getting their kids back, and obtaining insurance! We launched new initiatives (Recovery Friendly Workplaces - PA), collected amazing data, but most importantly, we got to learn from and help community members find their best path towards wellness with no strings attached. The best part? Participants didn’t have to pay a penny for services! RCOs are the future of supporting communities across mental health & substance use. It’s amazing what happens when you drop the pretense, meet people where they are, and support their goals - be they harm reduction, abstinence, or just living life in the best way possible!
