Happy Pride from Kappa Iota! All who live and identify as women are welcome in Sigma Kappa. We are proud to celebrate our LGBTQ+ sisters.
Happy Juneteenth from Kappa Iota! Juneteenth marks an effective end to slavery in the United States on June 19, 1865 - almost two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Support the efforts to recognize Juneteenth as a national holiday here: https://www.change.org/p/united-states-congress-make-junete
Throughout the weekend, we have watched our members push Sigma Kappa to be better, and we want you to know we are listening and appreciate your perspective. Sig...ma Kappa as a national organization can no longer be quiet. This is our responsibility too. Leaning into our value of loyalty, we express our loyalty to our Black sisters and the Black community as a whole. We see you, we stand with you, and we will not be silent. We would be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge that within our 146 years of existence, our organization has not always been inclusive to people of color, different religions, sexual orientations and abilities. For this, we are deeply sorry. There is no excuse for those actions. We acknowledge the pain we have caused. Sigma Kappa is committed to working toward creating better resources for our members that address diversity, inclusivity, social justice, advocacy, and equality and has supported a diversity and inclusion task force since 2018 to promote this work. We are constantly trying to improve our organization and make it a safe, equitable, supportive space for women of color. We welcome suggestions furthering this mission of advocacy and inclusion at [email protected]. For now, we want to encourage our sisters to educate themselves and take action. We need to use our privilege to pull on the levers of power and change policies that enforce institutional racism. The resources listed below are not exhaustive. We encourage you to reach out to your local Black Lives Matter chapter and/or your local American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to learn more about what you can do in your community. You can also find additional organizations sorted by state here: http://www.racialequityresourceguide.org//Racial%20Healing To educate yourself: https://medium.com//what-white-people-can-do-for-racial-ju https://www.racialequitytools.org/resourcefiles/kivel3.pdf Take action: https://act.colorofchange.org//justiceforfloyd_george_floy https://www.change.org/p/mayor-jacob-frey-justice-for-georg https://www.aclu-mn.org/en/call-for-justice-for-George-Floyd https://www.naacp.org/campaigns/we-are-done-dying/ Reading suggestions: https://www.elle.com//g3/black-history-books-reading-list/ https://www.buzzfeednews.com//george-floyd-amy-cooper-anti For Sisters who are parents: https://www.parenttoolkit.com//how-to-talk-to-kids-about-r https://www.prettygooddesign.org/ https://ttppoliceviolence.businesscatalyst.com/ https://www.goodreads.com//sh/43473043-social-justice-kids Mental health and self-care resources for Black women: https://www.popsugar.com//health-wellness-fitness-brands-f https://www.blackgirlsbreathing.com/ https://www.dearblackwomenproject.com/resources And finally, we want to hear from you. We want to share your stories, amplify your voice, educate fellow sisters and encourage change. Email us at [email protected]. We hope you will join us in taking tangible action. In the coming days, we will be spotlighting some of our collegiate chapter responses that provide hope for a better future.
We are proud that our National Organization shares our support for the Black community. Please see Kappa Iota's intentions moving forward and a link to available resources on this page.
Sigma Kappa at Penn is outraged by the long-standing trend of state-sanctioned violence against the Black community. We refuse to be silent. https://linktr.ee/sigmakupenn
A HUGE congratulations to our graduates today! We will surely miss their laughter and smiles, but know their lives are only just beginning! @ University of Pennsylvania
