Urban Roots Philly 04.03.2021

9 signups so far for CSA week. That means 1 more and we donate a year of veggies to a family in need. Or 11 more, then 2 families. Only 21 away from feeding 3 families for a full year!... Last year we collaborated with Garrett Williamson, the organization where we farm, to feed up to 10 scholarship families a week with the same beautiful bags that we load into the BMWs and drop around the Main Line. But frankly, life’s hard and there’s a lot going on for all of us, and it kin...da ended up more like 3 steady families each and every week. This year we are gonna do better and really try to stick with our families for what should really be a transformational experience of cooking and eating healthy. We dumped a lot of donations on food banks and religious groups, but this felt like a deeper and more meaningful connection. Plus we loved giving folks in need the same level of attention and respect as the folks who can afford to drop $1000 up front to support a farm. And to everyone in between: we got those payment plans and discounts, just ask. LETS GO BABY LETS FEED THE PEOPLE THIS WEEK!!!!!! See more

Here’s a good reason to sign up for a CSA: it’s probably the best deal you can get. $38 (after discounts) x 25 weeks is a half a year full of veggies. Like real full - flip through some of these shares, and know that we will come even harder in 2021. We know it’s a lot to pay up-front, so we can help with that. Got payment options. Just ask. And they’re the realest veggies too. With this much delicious produce, you’ll spend less on other food, eat more of what’s better, have more fun cooking and feel happier and healthier. It’s the good life. For $38 a week if you sign up now! To celebrate the best possible deal on the best possible veg, here is a picture of the best possible plow job you can get with a 26-hp tractor. Now come join our CSA community!!!

So you may have heard we’re partnering with @horseshoeranchpa to offer two chickens every two weeks. APPARENTLY SOME PEOPLE THINK ITS HARD TO COOK WHOLE CHICKENS??? Since it’s actually way easier than cooking parts of chicken, or even vegetables, I just put salt on it and grilled it and skipped that whole part, so I can show you how easy it is to cut up. Cause that must be the hard part I guess? And yeah the chickens a little under, sorry, like 30 seconds in the oven while yo...u get the rest of the food served and then it’s so perfectly juicy. ANYWAYYYY... 1. Legs pointed at you, left leg off, then right, knife moves from the top to bottom along either side of the butt bone, they almost just fall off. 2. Then breast side up, cut along the breastbone, peel it off the rib cage. Don’t hack, but change the direction of cutting if that makes it easier. 3. And like that’s it. You take the rest and put it in the stock. Even leg bones if you’re fancy like me and took them out (I just did that so theres more bones for stock). Now that you are convinced how easy that is, and how nice it cooks, and how lovely it is to have chicken stock for this fall weather..... visit @horseshoeranchpa for some truly pasture raised birds to add on to your Fall / Winter CSA. And get excited for some of this Bloody Butcher Corn to make your own polenta at home. Another thing that couldn’t be easier but sure is awesome. My favorite part is making a rich, simple chicken sauce. To do that, you need to finish your stock and save it for the next chicken dinner (two birds every two weeks), and use that with the next carcass to double down in flavor town. See more

We are excited to make a big announcement! Sign up for Fall/ Winter CSA and add on bread from @ursabakery , eggs and chicken from @horseshoeranchpa , and cheese from @collectivecreamery . You purchase your subscriptions individually through each producers website (email us for schedule and to sign up for 10 weeks of Fall / Winter veggies at $40/week), and your orders will be picked up or dropped off along with your CSA Veg Share, everything available at all pickup locations.... Starts in two weeks!!! We are humbled to be included in a group of people who create more than just a product, they put an entire life's work in each piece. We hope that you support us in this endeavor, and that you value the common thread that runs through our separate work: the backbone is raising the very best ingredients in a way that is harmonious to the land and to nature. There's nothing to chicken and eggs besides what they eat and how well they are raised. There's nothing to cheese besides quality milk from healthy cows. There's nothing to bread besides fresh grain. There's nothing growing your vegetables besides sun, water and earth. Yet cooking and eating like that is the good life. We are very grateful to be able to provide a real bounty of the best that the land and producers of Southeastern PA has to offer. The prices are similar to quality food you buy anywhere. But it is so, so much more than that. Yeah, the chicken tastes incredible. Both cheesemakers have long established great reputations for excellence. And the bread might be some of the best I've ever had. But that's not even it. To get to eat food that has so much thought and caring and love and years of understanding put into it, that is one of the most valuable things in life. You can taste the difference, but more than that, you can feel it. It's many people's entire lives, and some of the best farming in the region. We hope you join us for a great fall and winter starting in just two weeks!!!

What a nuthouse. See you @farmtocity @thebrynmawrfarmersmarket tomorrow 9-12, 12-1 for elderly / immunocompromised

Urban Roots Philly 11.08.2020

What a nuthouse. Can’t believe they both spin. Anyone with experience or knowledge here: one of these sure smells burn-y when I run it, and I’d like to stop that. Had to reverse some wires to get it to spin as opposed to agitate. Don’t wanna lose my special guy before we even get a chance to spend time together. This was also $0 I’m so pumped.

The gang has been crushing it and it looks like there will be a fall/winter CSA after all. It’s 10 weeks from mid-October to the week of Christmas. But we have less spots than we have now during summer, so we anticipate no new availability. If you’d like to be on the waiting list that will then become the first-dibs-on-2021-CSA list, then email us subject waiting list with your name and phone number. Between now and then we’ll hopefully figure out how to have a 300-plus person CSA. Thanks for your support it means so much!

Flying on the 656 hydro. Three years of actively killing weeds and we’re finally trying to turn some of it into a more passive activity. Not sure how we’ll work in a winter cover crop, but we’ll do it very carefully. Craving a more clean slate in spring. Curious what everyone else does for that. Seems important. Can’t exactly plan on plowing in March. Maybe only seed winter peas in mid-October and try to cultivate them a few times?
