#TBT: Before dams were constructed on the Ohio River, you could walk across the entire width of the river in periods of dry weather. It wasn’t until 1875, congr...ess approved and funded the construction of Lock and Dam 1, located at Davis Island, 4.7 miles downstream of Pittsburgh. Upon completion in 1885, the project consisted of one 600 X 110-foot lock chamber and a wicket dam, which allowed river traffic to navigate without going through the lock during high water. See more

Two Corps’ workboats moored at the foot of the dam were also struck and driven into one of the dam’s concrete piers, causing significant damage to both vessels. Nine barges and the Army workboats were declared constructive total losses in the accident. Total damage exceeded $12.5 million. See more

#whatsthebigdeal: River transportation is the greenest, most cost-efficient method of shipping bulk commodities. The cargo capacity of one barge is equivalent t...o 15 jumbo hoppers or 58 trucks. To put it in perspective, one dry-cargo barge carrying 58,333 bushels provides enough grain to make 2,449,986 loaves of bread. Furthermore, one-liquid cargo barge carrying 27,500 barrels of oil is enough to supply gas to 2,946 people for one year. See more
