As we are in the midst of the heavy holiday shopping season, consumers should be aware that some of the most popular gifts of the season are subject to forced arbitration clauses, including Nintendo games, Hot Wheels cars and virtually every cell phone on the market. That means if something should go wrong with one of these gifts or if there is a disagreement with the manufacturer, consumers "cannot have their day in court." Instead, they must go through a potentially time-consuming, costly and daunting arbitration process.

Last year, new consumer protections for servicemembers and veterans were signed into law. The new federal law, which went into effect on September 21, 2018, requires free security freezes and one year fraud alerts at the three nationwide credit reporting agencies, The law also addresses a number of key financial issues for the military including: mortgage protections, free credit monitoring, and medical debt credit reporting restrictions which go into effect in May 2019.
