We're back with Varga Bar's ABCs of Whiskey. V is for Van Winkle. After working as a salesman for WL Weller & Sons, Julian Sr. "Pappy" Van Winkle opened a new Stitzler-Weller distillery, and in 1972 sold the distillery and all his brands except for Old Rip Van Winkle. He later purchased barrels of Stitzler-Weller distillate, and left the rights to his son. Now produced at Buffalo Trace Distillery, there's no telling what juice is actually inside the bottles, but the hunt for Stitzler-Weller juice drives this hype train.
