Mama Daovy our matriarch of Vientiane, is our head chef. As an immigrant refugee, she overcame many obstacles in her life. Being the oldest of 11 kids she had to make sure her siblings were fed even if it leads her to not eat at all, these were the stories she would tell us from time to time. Which lead her to survive off of anything she can come across to cook and eat like the gecko on the wall. After finishing high school she continued her education for 3 years in Thail...and to study management for special orphanage children in Laos. She was the head director for the orphanage from 1968 until the communist regime took over. She escaped Laos in 1978 by swimming across the Mekong River to Nong Kai, Thailand refugee camp. Her chilling stories of dodging dead bodies in the water still haunts us. Mama Daovy finally came to America in 1980 escaping her reality to start a new life in the land of freedom. She settled in Philadelphia, the city of refuge for many immigrants. After tackling many jobs such as sewing, farming and lastly working for a Thai restaurant, she finally decided to stay at home and cook. She cooked for many events within the community and for the Lao temples. At the time there were no known Lao restaurant in Philly so her cooking was very special. Everyone came to eat her food, even if it was illegal. Every summer she set up a tent in her backyard with boarded up fences to allow for guest to dine in. As quoted from a long time patron it was like walking into Laos. She had grown a lot of her own vegetables in the backyard that she used for her cooking, so you know you’re in for a delicious treat. Fast forward to 2020, mama Daovy is still surviving and even worst, fighting to stay open during a Worldwide pandemic. Today we want to recognize her. She is loving, caring, kind and most importantly hardworking. If there is anyone that deserves this recognition, it would be Chef Daovy. Thank you. #weloveyoumama #chefstory #cheflife #chef #laochef #chefs #philadelphiachefs #sheisthebest #hardwork #shelovestoparty #laos #storytelling #immigrantstory #truestory #jamesbeard #michelinstar See more
