In recognition of Juneteenth, we’d like to share this original piece from our current Fallingwater artist-in-resident, Stephen Towns. His work explores how American history influences contemporary society, and for his upcoming exhibition at The Westmoreland Museum of American Art, Stephen Towns: Declaration & Resistance, he’ll examine the American dream through the lives of Black Americans. This piece, I am the Glory, is a reflection of those lived experiences. All of my... work is rooted in my growing up in the Deep South. My work is in direct response to issues permeating African American culture, issues such as loss of ancestral roots, slavery, class, education, skin tone and religion. I want to create beauty from the hardships in life. The work he’s assembling for the exhibition, including a painting of Fallingwater cook Elsie Henderson, is a study on Black American labor as a means to achieve the American Dream. Join us next week, June 23 at 1 p.m., EDT, for a conversation with Stephen. Register today for this free webinar: bit.ly/3g7Sv74.
