This was shared with me from a dear Friend.. Brenda Gordon... granted this article is in a modern era but the Ice Cutting by the Amish and the transferring of it to the wagon and then the Ice House is still pretty cool and allows us to see something’s that basically reflects back to the era of Ice Cutting and gathering in Conneaut Lake back in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s... I hope you enjoy the share and thank you Brenda. https://www.facebook.com/100000821242605/posts/3600080223362650/?d=n

Hi Everyone..... well it’s getting to be that time of year again when I sit around and write about the history of the area or other history stories in general. I thought I’d write this initial post this evening to let all of you know that I haven’t forgotten about you and while the months have been long between stories, history has continued to be written each and everyday we live... I’m not sure how much y’all think about it personally, but we are all currently living histor...y now.. the events of Covid and the Elections of 2020 will both be historical events that our kid and grandkids will read and research about in the future.. I tell my young staff that works for me that they are living history daily, and even though they might be Covid fatigued or disinterested in the Election that happens this fall, but what’s going on around them is nothing less than historical times and events which will be written for others to read in the future. Putting aside all politics and how each of you feel, this period of time is truly historic. This period of time will definitely be written in great detail and will forever talked about. I find it sobering to realize that I’m part of a historic period of time that’s going to be memorialized for the future to read. Without talking politics or expressing that the Covid is fake or such... I would love to see and hear what you think about how this historical period of time reflects on you and your feelings.. Lastly, I’ve been working on several stories... and my first will be a series of stories on the Conneaut Lake Ice House that once stood in Conneaut Lake from 1880-1928 (I think I have my dates right). I look forward to writing them and sharing with you my findings. I hope you will tune in. So with all that said... I want to wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving and an early Christmas & New Years Please stay safe everyone during this period of time that we live in.

The Conneaut Lake Area Historical Society is proud to unveil our newest exhibit: a scale model of the Ice Houses, built by Gary Worthington. You’ll have to see ...it to believe it... the detail and accuracy is amazing of the ice houses themselves, the inclines, the shoreline, the railroad cars. Also learn about the ice industry, see photos of harvesting the ice and some of the actual tools used. Visit our museum Sat and Sun 2-5 pm, or call 724-9841 to schedule a personal tour. See more

Help me identify this my History Fans!! So I went for a walk on a section of the Erie Extension Canal today, just south of 285.. to take some photos for a really cool story/adventure for this weekend, and I found what’s in the the pictures below in the canal bed... It didn’t look this good when I found it, it took me over an hour to get it this clean... it’s pretty heavy.. it’s old and I’m not sure if it’s from the Canal Era or the early Railroad Era???... I’m wishfully leaning that it’s from either a canal boat or a canal lock.. but I’m curious if any one out there might have a better idea?!?!?! Could it be part of a Scale weight measuring devise?? Maybe some type of Latching devise??? I’m not sure... how about y’all.?.?. Post your thoughts... I’m curious if anyone has ever seen something like this. Like I said, I found this in the Canal Bed, on the far side, meaning not the side that the Railroad Tracks were on.. but it could be RR related.
