"Lift Every Voice and Sing" peformed by Mrs. Kennedy's class on January 18, 2019. Every year her class performs a wonderful play honoring the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. MLK Day, celebrated each year on the third Monday in January, became a national celebration on January 20, 1986. In 1994 Congress designated the day as a national day of service - "a day on, not a day off", as people were encouraged to share their time, resources, and work to help improve their communities. Thank you to everyone who lifts their voices, wtih faith and hope, continuing Dr. King's work for equality and justice for all. #mlkday2021 #mlkdayofservice #lifteveryvoiceandsing

There was a buzz coming from Miss Gallagher's third grade classroom at WES on Friday as they were engaged in some very lively rounds of Kahoot! She and several of her students were also celebrating National Hat Day! #wssdteachersrock

# The SHMS annual Day of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is incredibly special as students, teachers, and staff come together for a full-day of activities and projects. There is always great enthusiasm, energy, and excitement as you can see in these scenes from previous years! This year was different as students were in the classroom and on Zoom and more limited in what they could do. The spirit of giving and helping others was still there tho...ugh, and we are grateful for that! A special thanks to Mrs. Cobb, Ms. Hano, and Mrs. Laird for coordinating! Everyone looks forward to next year’s event, hoping that it will be back to its full-scale. In the meantime, some of the SHMS teachers discussed wanting to spread this giving spirit around the WSSD community, and they are asking for students and their families to share photos of their philanthropic activities for the MLK Day of Service on January 18th, as well as at other times. Share your photo and description at this link: https://forms.gle/RwrfjjKva6yk41Dd6 or if sharing on social media, please use #WSSDBetheChange. Thank you!

Although Wallingford Elementary School was not able to hold their annual Martin Luther King, Jr. assembly this year, they are still holding their Chain of Love fundraising project. Students create four paper links that bear a specific dream for a better world for our children. All links are attached to form a Chain of Love displayed in the school hallways. They are asking for donations to sponsor the chains, and the funds raised will support Tree House Books, an organization... that provides free books to children and families in Philadelphia and offers programs that promote literacy and a lifelong love of reading. Please drop off your contribution to your WES teacher or at the main office by Friday, January 22. Please send in your contribution in a sealed envelope marked MLK. Checks should be made out to WES Sunshine Fund with Tree House Books written in the memo. Please include the following information: student’s name and teacher (if applicable), contributor’s name, pledge per link, and total contribution. Thank you for your support!

Strath Haven Middle School's 2021 Day of Service looked different than previous years, but the teachers and students worked hard to keep the spirit of generosity and caring going - despite the pandemic. Students wrote cards and letters to health care workers, service members, breast cancer patients and more. They discussed Martin Luther King's work and legacy and talked about the many ways they can make a difference in their community. Eighth grade students also watched the movie "Selma". Thank you to everyone for your participation! #WSSDBeTheChange
