What’s in a handful of soil? This sample, taken from a stream in PA, is a relic of the extensive wetlands that were once common across the mid-Atlantic landscape. The streams we see today look and function differently from the wetland complexes that early European settlers came upon just a few centuries ago. Can you see the walnut embedded in the soil? Curious about where sediment comes from and why it matters? Check out this short video by the Chesapeake Bay Program featuring U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientist Allen Gellis at Linganore Creek, MD.
On-the-ground survey work is an important part of what we do here at WSI! It helps us verify remotely-sensed mapping and provides an opportunity to interact with the public and enjoy some time outside. Pictured: Survey work on Chiques Creek in Lancaster County, PA.
Historic mills and dams are an iconic part of landscapes across the mid-Atlantic. What may come as a surprise is their role in shaping our modern waterways! To learn more, visit our website. Field work takes many forms for the WSI team! Whether we are wading a stream or flying a drone, we are always hard at work gathering the best possible data for our clients and partners!
Exciting News! A recent WSI publication has been chosen to receive the Journal of Soil and Water Conservation Editor’s Choice Honorable Mention Award. We are honored by the recognition of this work and are very proud of the team behind it. Article link: https://www.jswconline.org/content/jswc/74/4/67A.full.pdf

Ongoing work at the Big Spring Run (BSR) restoration site has again confirmed the presence of Juncus torreyii, a PA threatened plant species. This unique wetland species colonized BSR after restoration, confirming the project's success from a regulatory stance (as the restoration of an Exceptional Value Wetland), while also speaking to the its long-term stability and sustainability.
