We saw a Brown Thrasher get clipped by a passing car yesterday. It was lying stunned in the middle of the road, so I ran over and picked it up. If you encounter a bird in this condition, the best way to help is to place the bird in a large paper bag or box. The dark, safe space will give the bird a chance to calm down and recover. Thankfully, the thrasher was ready to go after two minutes of rest.

This looks like a great new film about the plight of the Philippine Eagle, one of the largest eagles in the world. A team of dedicated professionals and volunteers are working to save this majestic animal from extinction. Around the two-minute mark you can see Giovanne Tampos, a former Conservation Science Trainee from Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, right here in Pennsylvania.

We're about to see a changing of the guard in our backyards, as some species fly south for the winter and northern breeders come to spend the winter in the Susquehanna Valley. I've been keeping close track of the birds in my yard since fall 2012. Here are the median dates of the last day of the year I saw some of our summer birds in my yard: Barn Swallow - August 22... House Wren - August 26 Ruby-throated Hummingbird - September 23 Chimney Swift - September 29 Tree Swallow - October 3 Gray Catbird - October 7 Chipping Sparrow - October 14 Here are the median dates of the first day of the year I saw some winter birds arriving in my yard: White-throated Sparrow - October 10 Golden-crowned Kinglet - October 11 Dark-eyed Junco (AKA "Snowbird") - October 30 Many other species, like Northern Cardinal, Carolina Chickadee, and most woodpeckers, are here year round.

We recently visited Powdermill Nature Reserve, the environmental research station of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. As many as a billion birds die in window collisions each year in the United States alone. Powdermill researchers, in cooperation with the American Bird Conservancy, are investigating different types of window glass with the goal of reducing fatal bird collisions with glass. They have compared simple window panes with panes featuring tinting or patte...rns, including black, ultraviolet, and colored. The photos show the specially designed flight tunnel used in this important research. The tunnel at Powdermill is one of only two in the world (the other is in Austria). One wild bird (captured minutes earlier) is sent through a small hole on one end of the tunnel. The bird flies towards the far end, where two windows of different types are mounted, forcing the bird to choose one or the other as its escape route. The bird's choice is videotaped and recorded by the researcher. Don't worry, a net prevents the bird from actually hitting the glass. After making its choice, doors are opened on the flight tunnel and the bird flies free.
