BEHIND THE MASK Aicia Marquez. When I was in elementary school, my mother worked at Landisville Learning Center. At the time, she worked as a job trainer. The impact that she had on the scholars that she supported was amazing. When we would see them in public, their faces would light up when they recognized my Mom. When we were old enough, my siblings and I would volunteer at the Special Olympics. It was exhilarating to see the excitement in those that we were support...ing. As I got older, I gravitated towards the educational arena. What I noticed is that a lot of young people lacked social and emotional skills that would be needed later on in adulthood. I vowed to give each young person that I came into contact with, at least one social or emotional piece that would aid them later on in life. Eventually, I was working at another place and I came into contact with students from La Academia at a park. I was amazed by the amount of respect that they exhibited to those around them. I have been intrigued by the school ever since. Eventually, I would go on to work in Philadelphia, where there were a plethora of charter schools. I was surprised that Lancaster did not have more. Upon returning, I went into the education of individuals with Autism. I learned a great deal of skills. When I saw the open position at La Academia in the Special Education Department, I jumped at the chance for employment within an institution of such great innovation. I plan to continue to give every scholar that I come in contact with, positive educational interactions so that they will want to push harder and soar higher. SUMMER SCHOOL IN NOVEMBER We understand that virtual learning is difficult. It's not normal. It can feel lonely and impossible some days. We are offering our scholars an opportunity for two weeks to catch up where they may have fallen behind. This is just one more way that we want to meet our people where they are and lift them up to where they belong! 10/26/2020-11/8/2020.
