We are so proud of two of our seniors in the program who represented Westminster at the National Collegiate Honors Council Annual Conference in New Orleans two weeks ago. One special part of the Honors Program is opportunities like these, participating and sharing in research to broad audiences! Troy and Jake, great job!

Marcus is a first year Honors Student at Westminster pursuing a degree in Biochemistry with a pre-med track. He is an associate member of Tri-Beta, the Biology Honors Society on campus. He is active in the musical side of campus, too! He plays in the jazz ensemble and the jazz combo. If that was not enough, he is a founding member of Westminster’s barbershop quartet, The Four Statesmen. Additionally, he serves as a Rotoactor. He felt that Westminster was the best fit for him, especially after an overnight visit. The Honors classes at Westminster, he has found to be intellectually stimulating and rewarding. Early registration is also a plus, he found last week as all the other first years began their scheduling. He is stoked for the Greece trip, and cannot wait to experience it in May!

Dani is one of our very involved seniors in the Honors Program, from Rome, Ohio. She is a public relations major, with a marketing minor. Dani is the News Editor for the Holcad, and a student content developer for Westminster’s Office of Marketing and Communications. Not to mention, she gives tours as a Titan Guide, and is a member of Westminster’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity. In the spring of her junior year, Dani completed a semester-long internship with the New Castle ...Community YMCA. She went above and beyond the normal internship activities and was able to contribute to the YMCA’s social media accounts, write press releases, and market events. Dani’s Honors Research is about the effects of corporate social responsibility has on companies in the clothing industry, like Aerie, Levi’s, H&M, and TOMS. Most importantly, she greatly appreciates the Honors Program because of the diverse courses she took, and is grateful that Westminster has felt like home for the last four years. Wish Dani the best of luck during her last few months here! See more

Everyone should be sure to support a few of our honors students at the Westminster Fall play. Brandon Williams will be playing the role of Tom in Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie. In addition to Brandon, Hannah Wilson is the Stage Director. These students have been rehearsing since early September. Be sure to check out the show on Thursday, Friday, Saturday (7:30 pm) or Sunday (2:30 pm). This sentimental play is set in the Great Depression, and will be more than exceptional, as the Westminster Theater program has proven time and time again!

Nevan, a sophomore Molecular Biology major and Computer Science minor, is from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. He currently is interning at the Pittsburgh based Information Technology company, Tier 1 Inc. His main responsibility is sales support. Through the Honors College at Westminster, Nevan has made great friends and has felt the community atmosphere that the program creates, enhancing his college experience. He decided to continue his education at Westminster because of thei...r strong scholarship opportunities, and the small, focused class sizes. At the end of his Honors class this semester, Nevan is looking forward to his final presentation. He, and other members of the Public Memory class, will present personal genealogical research through the lens of historical remembrance and collective memory. If you cannot find Nevan doing Chemistry homework with his friends in the Honors Longue, you can probably find him skateboarding around New Wilmington, and hopefully finalizing the Spikeball Club Constitution in the coming months. Last Thursday night, two honors students, Sam and Sara, held a fundraiser at Buffalo Wild Wings in Hermitage for Habitat for Humanity. They are both on executive board for Westminster's Habitat Chapter. They were both very impressed with the success of the event, and the support they received from campus, and their fellow Honors College students!

Sammi is the President of the Honors College at Westminster. She is not only a model student, but is incredibly involved on campus. She has been a Resident Assistant, Teaching Assistant, a Student Admissions Leader, and apart of Chemistry Club, Omicron Kappa Sigma, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and the Student Alumni Association. She engaged in an internship this summer at Magee Women’s Hospital and Research Institute studying copy number variat...ion in Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and other human diseases. Her favorite thing about the Honors Program is our wonderful Honors Director, Dr. Kalata, and the opportunity to take challenging interdisciplinary classes. Sammi is super excited to defend her Honors Research next semester, as she is currently (trying) to grow slime mold in an effort to examine its histone mRNA and study the molecular dynamics and transcriptional mechanics involved in its processing. Even though Homecoming is a busy day, be sure to stop into the Honors Lounge tomorrow at 11 AM to meet with Maggie Long, an Honors Program alumna who is currently attending Medical School at the University of Buffalo. She is an incredible honor to have back on campus to alleviate any worries you might have about medical school, and to answer any questions you might have! Do not worry, there will be snacks provided.
