FIRE SAFETY FRIDAY The graphic provides a familiar reminder about not smoking around medical oxygen. If you have medical oxygen in use in your home, here are some additional safety tips: Store oxygen cylinders at least 5 feet from heat sources such as open flames or electrical devices.... Store oxygen cylinders in an upright position in well-ventilated areas. Post "No Smoking" and "No Open Flames" signs to alert residents and guests to the presence of oxygen. Never use aerosol sprays with combustible materials near oxygen. Substances with oil and grease such as body oils and lotions can easily burn. Don't use or keep these items where oxygen is in use. Where oxygen is in use, never use a sparking toy, open flames such as a match or lighter, a fireplace or stove, or any other device fueled by gas, kerosene, wood, or coal. In homes where oxygen is in use, there is a higher risk of fire because of increased oxygen in the air, furniture, clothing, hair, and bedding. Take extra fire safety precautions. #FireSafetyFriday #FireSafetyTips #SafetyTip #MedicalOxygen See more

Our hearts are saddened this week as we lost a long time member of the Wexford VFC family. Life member George Thunell passed away yesterday. George was a respected member of the company serving in multiple positions, including fire chief. He was also an active scuba diver when our organization had a water rescue dive team in the ‘80s and ‘90s. More importantly, George was a beloved family member, and our thoughts are with the Thunell and Hartman families at this difficult time.

In 1921, fire protection in the Pine Township/Wexford area involved well-intentioned neighbors that came running to blazes with buckets of water. A group of local farmers gathered after a fire and decided that it was time for organized fire protection. The Wexford Volunteer Fire Company No 1 of Pine Township was established as a result of that meeting. Through the dedicated efforts of many talented members and the steadfast support of the Township of Pine, we are proud to say that we are entering our 100th year of service to the community! We're not sure what this year will bring in terms of public gatherings, but we hope to share in the celebration of this special milestone with the public in an open house event later this year. Stay tuned for details and follow this page for periodic commemorations of our 100-year history.

Today was the 95th birthday of Life Member Ray McKinney, so members joined the parade to wish him the best! We also got a chance to see our old Brush truck, a 1943 Ford GTB G-622 bomb carrier, which served Wexford VFC from 1946 until 1973 and has since been refurbished to look as it did back in WWII during its Navy service.

228 and 185 were alerted for a vehicle crash with entrapment on Wexford Road in fire zone 2 this morning. 228RQ arrived on scene and made patient contact, noting the patient was not complaining of injury, only trapped. 228RQ utilized quick stabilization and the glass saw to cut the windshield, freeing the patient. 228CHF held the assignment to 228 units to perform traffic control until the tow arrived.

Station 228 responded to a CO detector activation this evening in fire zone 2. Units checked the caller’s residence in a multi family dwelling with levels around 100 PPM. 228CHF had units perform a sweep of the neighboring units to check for any levels while waiting for the gas company to investigate further. Since the other residents were not home, 228RQ slipped the sampling probe in the other residence behind the weather stripping and read over 1600 PPM. CO levels at this c...oncentration are fatal in less than an hour. 228RQ forced the door and conducted a primary search. Levels maxed out the meters. A vehicle was found left running accidentally in the garage. Two cats were rescued and are doing well. We strongly encourage all residents to have CO detectors in their homes. CO is colorless and odorless, and a CO detector is the only way to protect your family from this hazard. See more

FIRE SAFETY FRIDAY- HOLIDAY EARLY EDITION Will our firefighters be following Santa with a visit to your house on Christmas this year? Read on to find out what brings us out the most during the Christmas holiday. We made a list and checked it twice- here are our Christmas time incident statistics from the past ten years: ... There were residential-related Christmas Day calls in six of the last ten years. The Christmas Day incidents included seven cooking-related fire alarm activations and one candle-related mantle fire. On the past ten Christmas Eves, there were three cooking-related fire alarm activations and one cooking fire. It's safe to say, cooking mishaps are the trend, and even minor ones pose a risk as most full-blown kitchen fires are the result of some type of mistake. While our members are willing and ready to respond to an emergency every day of the year, we'd like to remind everyone to keep an eye on what's cooking and be safe with other things that can cause a fire. #FireSafetyFriday #FireSafetyTips #HolidayFireSafety

Cooper, a 9-year-old, 4th grader from our Pine/Richland community was just handed one of the toughest diagnoses known to the pediatric population. After experie...ncing a few headaches, he underwent emergency surgery at UPMC Children's to remove an aggressive and life-threatening brain tumor. He has recently been transferred to St. Jude’s Hospital in Tennessee for additional, long term care. We ask our community this. Let’s see how many Christmas cards we can send to Cooper and his family this Christmas! Who’s with us!? Let’s show Cooper that although he fights, he is not alone! Please send your Christmas cards and kind words to the address above, and show them that although they fight, they do not fight alone. If you would like to know more ways that you can help, his family has set up a Go Fund Me page (https://www.gofundme.com/f/yk27n4-c). You can join Cooper’s Crew to help raise money to support the Nindl family while they focus on Cooper's recovery and treatment. Thank you all in advance for your support! SANTA EXPRESS 2020 UPDATE: Unfortunately, after great consideration, we have decided to cancel Santa Express for 2020. This decision was made in the interest of public safety. In order to continue to provide the residents of Pine Township and surrounding communities uncompromised fire and rescue services, we must make some difficult decisions to ensure we maintain adequate staffing levels. Our members are deeply saddened by this decision, as brining Santa to see all of the children, young and old, is one of the great highlights of our year. However, we all serve our community with the primary purpose of protecting life and property, and with the current pandemic situation, we must make difficult decisions to ensure we continue to do so.

FIRE SAFETY FRIDAY This one is becoming an annual tradition- use extreme caution if planning to fry your turkey next week. Here are five tips to keep your turkey frying experience safe: Turkey fryers can easily tip over spilling hot oil over a large area.... An overfilled cooking pot will cause the oil to overflow when the turkey is placed inside. A partially frozen turkey will cause hot oil to splatter. Turkey fryers can easily overheat and start a fire. The pot, lid, and handles of a turkey fryer can get dangerously hot and cause burn injuries. We wish everyone a happy and safe Thanksgiving! #FireSafetyFriday #FireSafetyTipsfetytips #turkeyfryer #CookingSafety https://youtu.be/HYvMWIvghnQ

Fire Prevention Week- Day 7 As we saw with Bill yesterday, it is good idea to keep a lid nearby while cooking. Join us in supporting the families of 103 firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2019 and previous years. Each year, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and fire service organizations from across the nation honor these firefighters and their families the first weekend in October at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The in person ceremony has been postponed this year, but remembrance for these fallen heroes continues through alternative activities. FIRE SAFETY FRIDAY In the fall and winter seasons, we have often seen power outages due to wind, ice, and snowstorms locally. Many residents find the addition of a portable or fixed generator to be a valuable measure of preparedness for a power outage. Take note of these tips to ensure safe operation of your generator: -Have permanently wired generators installed by a professional, with any necessary permits and inspections required by your local building code department.... -Only use heavy gauge extension cords when connecting appliances to portable generators. -To avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, do not operate generators inside the house. Keep them away from windows and as far away from the house as possible. -Make sure that you have functioning carbon monoxide alarms on each level of your home. -Do not allow generators to operate in wet areas. -Do not refuel your generator while it's running. #FireSafetyFriday #FireSafetyTip #GeneratorSafety #COtheSilentKiller

FIRE SAFETY FRIDAY In recognition of National Preparedness Month, we are sharing a tip on family emergency preparedness. While we may enjoy little risk from earthquakes and hurricanes, no part of the country is immune to the effects of a natural or manmade disaster. In a widespread disaster, it can take several days for easy access to daily necessities due to various factors such as damaged stores, increased demand, and disrupted supply chains. Make sure to take some simple steps to ensure your family has the basic necessities to get by for a few days after the onset of a disaster. Purchase and build a stock of these items when there is no impending disaster, and they're easy to obtain. We're proud to announce that members Robert Hetzel and Ed Ley have attained life member status this year through completion of 20 years of service. Many volunteer fire departments have a "life member" classification to honor dedicated members that have completed a certain number of active service years. For the member, it is a special honor to always be a part of the organization, no matter where life may take them. Robert served many years as a talented apparatus operator f...or us. He served multiple terms as a board member and secretary. Robert was also part of our first group of live-in firefighters in 2003. Ed has always brought a positive "can do" attitude to the company. His vast practical knowledge through his career as a steamfitter has helped make him a valuable firefighter. Ed has also been a long time board member. PSA- There have been 5 emergency responder struck and killed by deaths on the roadways in the last 21 days. 27 emergency responders (including police, fire, EMS and tow operators) have been killed while operating on the roads so far in 2020. All 50 states have "Steer Clear" or "Move Over" laws that require motorists to move into a lane away from an emergency scene or significantly reduce speed if moving to another lane is not possible. Just as important- please don't drive while drunk, drugged, drowsy, or distracted, and always drive with care and consideration of others on the road. As emergency responders, there's only so much we can do to protect ourselves while on the road. A large part of the responsibility to keep us safe is in your hands. Please share!

We want to thank AOA for the great customer service and fast turn around to get us this product that will not only protect our members during the pandemic, but in the future as well! -Jacob Ballard, President Wexford Volunteer Fire Company
