Wheek Care Guinea Pig Rescue 15.11.2020

In early December, 2015, this sweet little 6 week old girl came into the rescue with pneumonia, and had been given the wrong dose (10 times the correct amount) of the wrong antibiotic. She had severe neurological damage, couldn't walk, was completely blind, had to be hand fed and hand watered. She had to get physical therapy and taught how to walk, how to find food and water with her blindness. She should have crossed the rainbow bridge. But good Lord was she stubborn... and determined. Gayl Augello and I worked endlessly. Penny learned how to find food and the water bottle. She learned how to walk, even if most of it was in circles. She got over her pneumonia. Then the first miracle happened. She regained a little bit of her sight. It wasn't perfect, but it was a blessing and improved her quality of life. Two years later, I noticed a lump on her left side. After 2 surgeries and pathology on the matter taken from the surgical site, it was determined she had bone cancer. Devastating news because this strain of cancer had not been seen in Guinea pigs before. Dr. Wagner removed the 2 ribs involved, but wasn't optimistic. He decided to try chemo to see if that would help. After 12 weeks, Dr. Wagner declared she was in full remission. The chemo had done its job. Miracle #2. Fast forward 2 1/2 years later...a month ago... Penny was still going strong, living in a herd with 4 other girls, and obviously the queen of her group. Then I saw it... another lump in the same place as before. It was small, but grew fast. Last week Dr. Wagner decided to do surgery to remove it. What he found was a massive cancerous tumor that had invaded her body wall. It was inoperable. Once again, I was praying for that miracle. She was strong and a fighter. Chemo was started again and she tolerated it perfectly. Then today came! Penny had a stroke, and she was out of miracles. At 5:01 pm, Penny crossed the rainbow bridge. My heart is beyond shattered and I can't stop crying. But so many great memories like this video, and everyone passing her around and wanting to hold this silly girl. I'll miss you, my sweet girl. You were a rock star among the best of them. Thank you for the laughter and the kisses. Thank you for showing me miracles do happen. And thank you for making my life so much better. ROCK ON, ROCK STAR

12 cute and fuzzy Guinea Pigs boarded a plane and flew to a second chance. Yes...little piggies can fly. Pilots Jonathan Plesset and Brad Childs, who may have a... new doppelgänger, flew to Columbus, Ohio to bring 12 little piggies to a new beginning. Upon landing at Rickenbacker International Airport Brad and Jonathan met up with Woopsadaisy Guinea Pig Rescue where they were ready with 12 adorable piggies who needed airlifted to the folks at Wheek Care Guinea Pig Rescue who would be arranging for homes for these little guys. Thank you to our pilots, the support teams, and the amazing crews at Rickenbacker International and the Allegheny County Airport for helping us fly this unique rescue mission. Watch the video and learn how one of these piggies bears a striking resemblance to one of our pilots.
