This project has been a nice change of pace for our staff and an excellent opportunity to contribute to herp research! The Daily Press in Virginia spent some time with our team last week learning about the project. https://www.linkedin.com//wildlife-specialists_the-hunt-fo
Insects are arguably one of the most adaptable and intriguing groups of organisms on the planet. The oil beetle is no exception. It’s blend of beauty, toxicity, and an extremely complex life cycle make it the perfect example of how insects have stood the test of time in an ever-changing world. Some interesting information on oil beetles can be found at the links below. My favorite quote from Naskrecki’s article:... tiny larvae known as triungulins emerge from the sand. They behave like shrews on amphetamines. Now that’s a mental picture haha! https://lnkd.in/eDUHDHy https://lnkd.in/eRB_iiq Photo credit: Stan Boder, Sr. Herpetologist at Wildlife Specialists
Better together ... with Remote Intelligence
Timber Rattlesnake Phase II season is underway and our herpetologists are busy documenting the presence of rattlesnakes at potential den locations. Why is this so important? Due to their need for specific conditions underground, populations of timber rattlesnakes can use the same overwintering dens for thousands of years. Snakes have probably been basking in this same spot on warm spring days since before most of our ancestors ever set foot on this continent. When we document these locations, we help our clients avoid critical habitat and contribute to timber rattlesnake conservation.
This Spring we have enjoyed working on a Red Cockaded Woodpecker - Longleaf Pine project in the National Forests of South Carolina. This unique species depends on specific forest conditions with older longleaf pine savannahs. They choose this tree species because it's soft core allows them to excavate a deep cavity in a living tree. Being a live tree, when the hole is made, pine pitch flows out (plus from other holes made by the woodpecker). This pitch protects the woodpeckers from would-be predators. It creates a problem, though. These savannahs are fire-dependent, and all the pitch flowing down the trees makes them more likely to catch on fire during a prescribed burn. Enter our habitat management team. Their job was to rake the pine straw and vegetation and create a firebreak around the base of each tree.

Fall is a great time to get out and enjoy some of our wildlife and wild settings.
