A Funny Thing About Those Posture Photos They show that many people are leaning forward, backward, or to one side when they could SWEAR that they were standing straight. That's because our brains adapt to the distortions caused by habitually tight and weak muscles. These days that's caused more and more by the use of computers and phones. Have someone take a photo of you from the front and side. Send them to [email protected] and I will analyze them for you, free of charge.

A structure like a bridge or building must be properly aligned within very strict tolerances. Otherwise it is likely to collapse. That's why we have bridge and building inspectors who check the structures regularly. Our bodies are also structures which are subjected to the same forces, gravity in particular. However, since our bodies have an inborn, innate intelligence they adapt rather than collapse. Your posture is how your body has adapted to gravity, whether you are ...sitting or standing. Every step you take as well as how you balance when you are taking that step, begins and ends with your posture. Your posture is also a reflection of how you are aging, as well as how your body is functioning as you move through your day. Since the office is still closed due to Covid 19, I am spending my days analyzing posture photos. If you would like your posture analyzed, just send me two photos through Messenger: one from the front or back and one from the side, head to toe. No charge. See more

Your Personal Fall Risk Assessment 1.) In a safe place, like a doorway or with somebody there to spot you, lift one foot off the floor. Can you hold it for at least 20 seconds without wobbling? If you feel unsteady, put your foot down immediately. 2.) Have someone take 2 photos of you standing with your best posture. One from the front and one from the side. Head to toe. Send them to me through Messenger. I will analyze them for you in terms of fall risk with suggestions. No charge.

I have been doing a program to improve my Posture, Balance, and Movement. It is a 7 week online program (more if you need it) that you can do in the safety and privacy of your home. Once you learn the simple, yet powerful exercises you can do them in just a few minutes a day. It is unlike any program you may have learned in physical therapy or at the gym. It promotes healthy aging, athletic performance, and fall prevention.

A research study using brain imaging showed that on dual tasks old people had to focus more than younger people. (I don't think the test was chewing gum and walking at the same time, though.) From the perspective of fall prevention it means that it is easier for an older person to lose his or her balance if distracted. Add to that a stooped posture and a slower reaction time and it's no surprise that 1 out of 3 people over the age of 65 fall, causing 2,000,000 visits to the emergency ward and 25,000 deaths each year. That's one important reason why when my practice reopens in a few weeks the focus will be on a detailed program for improving Posture, Balance, and Movement. If you are old, it's not too late. If you are young it's not too early to begin.

The biggest problem with teens these days is posture. Their weak, folded posture that, unless corrected, will lead to many problems that will dog them for a lifetime. The 3 biggest factors are heavy backpacks (more than 10 to 15% of the teenager's weight), computers, and cell phones. This is especially true with younger teens whose bones are still growing. When the office reopens after the Corona virus shutdown, the focus of the practice will be posture, including a special posture program. The combination of freeing individual joints and a program of focused postural exercises along with sensible lifestyle changes is a winning combination for teens and adults alike.
