Nina Simone Eunice Kathleen Waymon was a singer-songwriter and big civil rights activist. She went to the Juilliard School of Music, changed her name, and afterwards played her own gospel, pop, classical, jazz-like unique music in local nightclubs. She continued playing her music and wrote her first civil rights song, Mississippi Goddam in response to the bombing of the 16th steet Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Despite the backlash, she continued to passionately w...eave civil rights messages into songs like, Old Jim Crow. She performed Why? (The King of Love is Dead), as a dedication to Martin Luthur King Jr, and included the song on her album, Nuff Said!. Nina Simone was an important figure. We honor her as Black History Month comes to an end, and will continue to as time goes on. . . Check out her more popular song, Feeling Good. It’ll make you ~feel~ (Link in bio) See more

Musician Mwednesday . . Louis Armstrong, also known as Satchmo, was one of the most prominent Jazz musicians of the 20th Century. Armstrong began playing the trumpet in the early 20th century on Riverboats in his hometown of New Orleans. As he began to gain more acclaim he moved to Chicago and then New York. He was especially impactful during the Harlem Renaissance gaining the admiration of Langston Hughes and other black creatives at the time. Armstrong was known for being popular with both white and black audiences, which was rare for many black artists at the time. Armstrong also spoke out against the treatment of the Little Rock Nine saying the government can, go to hell. Armstrong broke barriers for black musicians everywhere, and today we honor him.

Always cry for love, never cry for pain - Prince . . . Prince Rogers Nelson was a singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, dancer and actor from Minneapolis, Minnesota. He grew up with musically talented parents, and was inspired by his father’s piano skills. Right out of school, at 18, he recorded a raw demo tape of a song called Soft and Wet'' and signed his first contract. He solidified a band with Andre Cymone, Bobby Z, Gayle Chapman, Matt Fink and Dez Dickerson, and described it as the culturally fluid rainbow band. Prince’s main goal was to unite all different people with music. He went on to write hundreds of songs, including Purple Rain Raspberry Beret, Let’s Go Crazy, and my favorite, When Doves Cry.
