I am deeply touched and reminded how fortunate I have been to share your path on this lovely walk in the park called Earth. I propose a paradigm shift for birthdays. State policymakers, as with the visionary leaders who came before them, can help us meet our own era-defining challenge by positioning higher education as a strategic asset for economic development and individual opportunity. In postsecondary finance, we can use the tools of budgets, loans, and stimulus f...unds to prioritize those institutional approaches that are most promising in economic recovery and individual opportunity. We can act statewide, we can hold both governments and institutions of higher education accountable, and we can consider reforms in governance and accountability systems where needed. A statewide taskforce of civic, business, and education leaders can provide long-term political support for a critical agenda by applying these First Principles for Strategic Investment in Higher Education 2020.
