I don’t usually share personal information on here but my mother died on Thursday . My Mom was a force of nature. She was magnetic, the type of person people gravitated to. Her laugh was a sound I always strived for. I loved cracking her up. She was the kind of person that when you asked something of her, you could forget about it and cross it off your list. She could always be counted on. ... She was tough. Tough in the sense of scrappiness and tenacity but also tough in that she possessed a sensitivity that could make her difficult to deal with at times. She powered through five years of hell with metastatic breast cancer going from one type of miserable chemo treatment to the next. Each one progressively chipped away at her quality of life but she powered on. My Mom was a true nurturer. It often felt like she was at her best when I was at my worst. Most of all she gifted me with a sense of security in the knowledge that no matter where we were in our relationship (and we definitely had our ups and downs) I was loved. I ALWAYS knew I had her love. My parents were together for almost 60 years. My Mom was 16 when they met. They shared a kind of relationship that I don’t really think exists anymore. They were totally enmeshed. My heart aches for my Dad. I feel extremely lost and so empty without her and can’t fathom his loss. She will be in our hearts forever.

Over the weekend Alex came in to get some yarn to learn how to knit. The conversation flowed to the pets we love and those we’ve loved and lost. She said she enjoyed painting pet portraits and offered to paint Gertie. Four days later I got this beautiful rendition of my soulmate girl. Thank you so much Alex! Check out her work @alexyerart and get her to capture your fur babies!

I want to start this post saying Black Lives Matter and white silence in the face of racism is racist. In the last week I have been protesting every day out of anger and a need to focus that anger somewhere but also a desire to show solidarity. I’ve been listening to the voices of people of color. I know for myself, I often have a tendency to speak when I should be listening. I’ve been reading, contacting my government representatives, signing petitions, and most of all re...flecting. I’ve been reflecting on all of the ways my life has benefited from white privilege and the responsibility I carry because of that. I want to be better at returning that debt and am trying to make plans for concrete ways I can begin to do that. As a small business owner, these last months have been extremely difficult. As a sole proprietor, I have not seen a dime of government funds. I have been anxiously awaiting the opportunity to reopen and reunite with my customers. I miss the sharing, creativity, teaching, learning, commiserating, support, stories, and laughs. I have missed you all like crazy. Yarnphoria will reopen Tuesday.
