In 2010, Makala nominated her father, Samir "Sam" Ashmar, for the Burn Prevention Network's Partners in Prevention Award. A Fire Marshall for Upper Macungie Tow...nship Fire Co. Station 56, Mr. Ashmar spent over 30 years to fighting fires and educating the community about fire safety and burn prevention. Makala's father passed away suddenly in 2014 shortly after returning home from a fire call. Makala continued to support the Burn Prevention Network in his memory, and we are proud to continue her legacy by recognizing all that the BPN does for our communities. Today would have been Makala Ashmar's 30th birthday. Makala lived every moment to the fullest and brought joy and light to the lives of everyone she met. We miss her dearly and are proud to carry on her legacy of service.

As we kick off our month of community service, the PAYRs are excited to support an organization that Makala Ashmar was a fearless advocate for. Makala served as... PAYR Chairwoman in 2020 and courageously lost her battle with cancer in September 2020. In her honor, PAYRs are raising dollars to support For Pete's Sake Cancer Respite Foundation, an organization that Makala benefited from during her battle. This organization raises funds to give cancer patients and families much needed relief.
