Am I experiencing ocular allergies or do I have dry eyes? Yes, even during a pandemic, allergy season happens. Hopefully, we’re listening to the professionals and staying at home. Being inside should help those who actually suffer with ocular allergies. Often, patients who believe they have allergies actually have dry eyes. The symptoms are similar. I often hear patients who have allergies complain of itchy, red, eyes. They also complain of excessive lacrimation or tearing. P...atients who have dry eyes often complain of a foreign body sensation, like something is in their eye. Paradoxically, they can also complain of excessive tearing. Often patients with systemic allergies, runny nose and sneezing, are put on medications which dry the nasal mucosa and, unfortunately, the ocular tissues as well, leading to dry eyes. How do you tell the difference? A thorough eye exam can determine the underlying cause of the discomfort. Unfortunately, that is difficult for the next few weeks. If you are experiencing the above symptoms, call my offices, and we can figure it out together. Stay safe friends....... See more

We continue to see patients on an emergency basis. Because of that, for the first time in my career, I'm doing eye exams wearing a mask and my glasses. I have found it difficult because my mask causes my glasses to fog up. I'm sure many of you are experiencing the same difficulties. I found an interesting article with some suggestions by Casey Christine. 1/ Make sure your mask is as tight as possible across the top. Warm air escapes from the top of the mask and can fog up you...r lenses 2/ Wash your lenses with soapy water 3/ Add a foiled tissue inside the top of your mask. Fold it a few times, put it right between your mask and the bridge of your nose, and it will absorb the moisture. This should lower the amount of condensation that ends up on your lenses. 4/ Fold the very top of the mask inward. Folding it creates extra space for your breath to escape before it hits yous glasses. The only con of this is that there is less of a seal that way. Good luck and stay safe See more

There is some confusion concerning the spread of COVID 19 and the use of contact lenses. Currently, there is no evidence to suggest that there is an increased risk of contracting or spreading the Coronavirus through contact lens wear. That being said, often patients touch their eyes more frequently when wearing contact lenses. If you are wearing contact lenses, we strongly suggest strict hygiene measures such as hand washing before and after insertion and removal of the lense...s along with optimal wear and care procedures. Replace the lenses in the prescribed regimen, case hygiene for reusable lenses, and discontinuation of lens wear if you are experiencing cold or flu like symptoms. Try to avoid touching your eyes. If you need lenses to hold you over to your next appointment with us, we will direct ship them to your house. Any questions, please call our offices. Hang in there, we are "flattening the curve". It's working, stay safe. I hope to see you soon!!!!! See more

Zikoski Vision Associates are focused on the safety of our physicians, patients, and staff during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. As of today, March 23, 2020, we are closing our offices for routine eye care. Ocular emergencies can be seen by appointment only. We will continue to order and dispense contact lenses and glasses. When the pandemic subsides, we will offer extended patient hours to accommodate those who have been inconvenienced by our closure. Thank you for your understanding and please stay safe.
