How to Prevent the Recurrence of Nail Fungus Following Treatment Many people are familiar with nail fungus treatment including oral Lamisil, topical anti-fungal treatments and laser treatment for nails, but once you are treated and your nails have improved, how do you keep from having a recurrent fungal nail infection? Nail fungus is a ubiquitous infection among the general population, especially as we age. The fungal spores thrive in damp, dark places like between your toes... and in your shoes. To avoid the fungal spores from taking residence on your skin and finding their way into your nails again, follow these steps to reduce the chance for reinfection: 1) Change sweaty/wet socks as soon as possible The damp conditions from sweaty skin and socks is a breeding ground for fungus. 2) Let shoes completely dry before wearing. Avoid wearing the same pair of shoes every day. Give shoes at least 24 hours to air out and dry before wearing. The drier the conditions inside your shoes, the less likely that fungus will grow. Alternate shoes every other day to allow them enough time to dry before re-use. 3) Treat the skin. If there is any sign of a fungal infection on the skin, treat it! Signs of a fungal skin infection , commonly known as Athlete’s Foot, are wetness between the toes, scaling skin along the outer soles of the feet and heels, itching, burning between the toes and the soles of the feet. By reducing the fungal count on the skin this lessens the chance that the fungus will end up in the nails. 4) Dry well between your toes to reduce moisture after bathing. This will make your skin and shoes less habitable for the fungal spores. Also sprinkling an antifungal foot powder between your toes before applying socks or stockings will help to keep the space between the toes dry. 5) Treat your shoes. The shoes can be treated with antifungal foot powder or UV appliances designed to be placed into your shoes to reduce the fungal count. If you notice any signs of a fungal infection on the skin or re-infection of the nails, call the AFFC TEAM right away, as a more superficial infection is usually easier to treat than a deeper nail infection." - Ann C. Plantar Warts Spreads easily Usually self-treatable Usually self-diagnosable Lab tests or imaging rarely required... Medium-term: resolves within months A message from Dr. Anderson on Plantar Warts! "Warts are small growths on the skin that are caused by a viral infection, the human papillomavirus. The HPV virus can infect the areas of the foot on the sole or toes and cause plantar warts. Sometimes warts can be painful or embarrassing based upon their size and location. They are difficult to treat because it is a viral infection that lives within the layers of the skin. There are many treatments for warts ranging from at home treatment with duct tape to medical treatments with liquid nitrogen. Warts can also be surgically removed if they are persistent, painful and not responding to topical treatments. Laser wart removal is an effective treatment for persistent warts as the laser is used to destroy the wart and prevent the return of new warts. If you have persistent plantar warts it is recommended that you give AFFC a call to discuss treatment options that are right for you! What are your plans for this weekend? Hiking , biking , time with family , or a day at the beach ? Remember to keep your feet safe! Sometimes, it can be hard to tell if you injured your foot or if you're simply sore. Here are a few key differences between an injury and sore feet.... If you've hurt your foot or ankle, it's best to err on the side of caution. The acronym R.I.C.E. can help you remember what to do: RestRest the affected area. Stay off the injured foot or ankle until it can be fully evaluated. Walking, running, or playing sports on an injured foot or ankle may make the injury worse. IceApply ice to the affected area as soon as possible, and reapply it for 1520 minutes every three or four hours for the first 48 hours after injury. Ice can decrease inflammation. CompressionWrap an elastic bandage (such as an Ace wrap) around the affected foot or ankle. The wrapping should be snug, but not so tight as to cut off circulation. ElevationElevate the affected extremity on a couple of pillows; ideally, your foot or ankle should be higher than your heart. Keeping your foot or ankle elevated also decreases swelling. If you think you've injured your foot or ankle call today or request your next appointment online! www.affc.com 610-434-7000 The AFFC TEAM will determine the extent of your injury and develop a plan of care to get you back on your feet!
