Williamsport E. R. Miller had a little something extra to be thankful for over the Thanksgiving holiday in 1909. At the time Miller was a resident of Colorado and a former resident of Williamsport who was visiting family and friends in town. While dinning at the Hotel Updegraff at 356 Pine Street (I believe on Thanksgiving day) he discovered a pearl in an oyster. The pearl weighed in a 7.5 grains and was valued at over $500 by a local jeweler. In today’s money (according to some online websites that do that kind of thing), the pearl would be valued at about $14,300. Pictured is the Hotel Updegraff at about that time. The building is still located on the southeast corner of Pine and West Fourth Street. The court house bell tower is off in the distance. This postcard is from our family collection.
