A new research study published this month by the CDC in a peer-reviewed journal (and viewable in PubMed) has demonstrated that the causative agent for Lyme disease is taken up by neuroglial cells, potentially evading immune responses and even antibiotics by hiding in the neuroglial cells. What are neuroglial cells? There are 3 types: astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and microgial cells. Astrocytes maintain a healthy environment for neurons of the brain; invasion into them coul...d cause an unhealthy environment, generating feelings of brain fog or memory loss. Oligodendrocytes make up myelin, the component lost in multiple sclerosis (MS) which could account for why many with chronic Lyme get MS-like symptoms. And, microglial cells are the defense and repair cells of the brain if invaded, infection is allowed to proceed and recovery can be impaired. This research helps to explain some of the signs and symptoms of Lyme, and also why it can be difficult to treat (since it can also evade, if internalized by one’s own cells, antibiotic treatment which is why antibiotics with intracellular activity must be used in difficult to treat cases).
