Competitions are back!!! Tomorrow is our first Science Olympiad invite of the year. It is the earliest we've ever competed, and in fact this is one of the first invites in the country this year. The Science Olympiad Board has gotten creative and this year we will be competing remotely either from our own homes or school. In this first invite, students will be competing with their partners from within their own homes. We can't compete in all events, but we're just happy we ...have Science Olympiad in any form. One advantage to remote invites is that we get to compete against teams we aren't familiar with. This invitational is made up mostly of teams from Georgia. I met the coach at the Summer Institute in Phoenix one year, and she invited us to her competition. We are the guinea pigs testing out their new online testing software and I'm sure there will be some hiccups, but we will work them all out. For those of you who like to keep tabs on us, they will be streaming the award ceremony tomorrow (Saturday, Oct 24th) at 5:00PM. Check back here for the link tomorrow afternoon. The students will be gathering for the ceremony (properly social distanced of course) and we may try to stream from our location as well. Hope to see you all online tomorrow! Go Wildcats!

With our recent visit from Comet Neowise, some of the Astronomy and Reach for the Stars team members and family were able to get together to do a little stargazing. The night started with us having a great view of the Space Station flyover. Afterward, we headed to the top of the hill to check out the comet. Jake was able to get some great pictures of the comet with his phone just by putting it behind his binoculars. Then we headed back to the observatory to check out Jupiter and Saturn. The time flew by and before we knew it, it was after midnight. We will have to try to fit another session or two in before school starts.

So excited for the new year.

Athens Science Olympiad 23.06.2020

It's been a strange summer, but I'm happy to say we've been able to fit in some Science Olympiad. This year (and last year's) Food Science topic for the B Division is Fermentation, so I grew some pickling cucumbers just for the occasion. On a beautiful summer morning recently, the Food Science team and a few others got together to mix up a batch of garlic dill pickles. This particular recipe is a straight forward example of fermentation in its simplest form (a picture i...s included below). Pickles were added to brine along with garlic, dill and a few spices. After 4-5 days in a cool, dark place the proof that fermentation has taken place is in the carbon dioxide bubbles and the tangy taste of lactic acid in the pickles. Each family took home their own jar to finish the process. We also discussed the processes that would take place and the purpose of each of the ingredients in the recipe. Finally, we tasted a batch of pickles that were started a few days earlier, and even took tastes of the pickle juice which was by then full of healthy probiotics. Here are some pictures!
