Is your head screwed on right? 2 weeks ago, your rest day homework was to stand on two feet 1 week ago, I had you check in with your pelvis... Today, we continue our scan up the body to your head (yeah, I know we skipped ribs and shoulders but sometimes placing the head places the rest). I’m gonna take a wild guess and say that your ears are in front on your shoulders instead of stacked over them. Now, shoving your head straight back won’t fix this - you just kinda end up with a double chin. Try this: Imagine sliding your head back and up a ramp, like someone is pulling your ears up a diagonal behind you. What does that feel like? Any other body parts fall into place? A few times today, check in with your feet. is your weight even on both feet? are you favoring your toes or your heels? rolling in or out? Centering yourself on your feet automatically sends a ripple effect up your body, putting everything in its place. I don’t care how you walk, just start walking! (Kinda...ballerina walks are great but to get the most out of your walk, keep reading ) Day 8 - 15 min walk But, Katie, why is walking such a large part of the challenge?... Walking is actually one of the best forms of postpartum movement. It’s a gentle way to start restoring core function. Walking with good form: conditions your midsection with each step helps stabilize your pelvis helps restore pelvic bounce (the natural movement associated with the pelvic floor) may help ease aches and pains The key to get the most out of walking is making sure you have proper form. I know it’s silly to think that you may be walking wrong but pregnancy introduces some weird shifts and movement compensations into our body that don’t bounce back on their own. If you’re pushing a stroller, don’t be tempted to lean on it try incorporating The Breath as your heart rate increases or while going up a challenging incline make sure you’re pushing with you back leg as opposed to pulling with your front leg (more on this one later) Now grab your challenge calendar (you know where ) and get out there! #bounceforward #breath #pilates #postpartum #bethlehempa #allentownpa #lehighvalleymom #diastasisrecti #ihaveconfidence #confidentcore

Where’s your pelvis? This week’s Rest Day Homework There’s always a lot of talk about what could be wrong with your pelvis after birth. Don’t tuck, it’s bad for your low back.Don’t arch, it’s bad for your low back.... Ummm, what? No wonder you’re confused! We need the ability to tuck (posteriorly tilt) and arch (anteriorly tilt) our pelvis, otherwise our bones wouldn’t have evolved to move that way. Just try going about your day without tucking or archinghow did putting your shoes on go for ya? Now after pregnancy, our ability to tuck has been greatly reduced. There was a lot of stuff in the way that made it really difficult! (And by stuff, I mean baby.) So we practice tilts/tucks/posterior tilts to bring BALANCE back to the muscles surrounding your pelvis. And when you have balanced muscles all around, your bones will naturally fall into the safest and best position for your body. Throughout today, I want you to check in with your pelvis. This goes along nicely with last week’s Stand on 2 Feet. You aren’t checking to see if your pelvis is wrong, you’re checking to see if you’re balanced. Think of it as a fact finding day. In an anterior tilt? Your low abs need a little strengthening and your low back needs a little stretching. In a posterior tilt? You might be overly gripping your rectus abdominis. You’ve still got homework Take it easy today (unless you’re playing catch up) BUT... I want you to check in with yourself a couple times today. Where can you start integrating what you’ve learned over these past few days into your everyday life? HW - Exhale THEN lift Today, when you go to pick up your kids (or something similarly as heavy) I want you to do The Breath (exhale sits bones, hip bones, ribs) THEN lift. This sets your core which helps you transfer force from the ground/your legs up through the rest of your body. Now, this isn’t all or nothing; it’s a sliding scale. Think 1 - I use a 2 when picking up my 9mo I use a 5 to pick up my 4yo A 7 when I lift my reformer to move it around A 10 when @bdonnelly19 convinces me to deadlift in the garage What are your levels? Do you set big goals? When you do, do you begin with the end in mind? When I plan for 2021, I do it with an eye to 2031, and another to 2026 (...guess I have three eyes for this analogy... ) Why?... Because in years, anything seems possible! From there, you then work backwards to figure out what has to happen in 5 years, and backwards again to plan out THIS year. In yet another way Pilates imitates life, when we look at where we’re going, the steps we take along the way all have a purpose. One of our quads (the rectus femoris) crosses both the knee and hip joint so in order to fully stretch it, we need to extend the hip AND flex the knee. ... Knees bother you? Think of drawing them together and down into the mat to take off the pressure. Rowing, how I love thee. Sometimes I get really down on myself when I can’t do a Pilates piece like I used to. But rowing, you’re always there for me I know, I know. If I were my own client I would give myself a reality check:... Momma, you had a baby 6 months ago . And it was your second! You’re relatively pain-free, can get up and down from the floor all dang day no problem, and don’t leak when you run after the 3.5 year old. You are healing incredibly well.
