President Lyndon Baines Johnson hosted many a barbecue at his ranch on the Perdanales River in Central Texas. His first state dinner, in which he met with West German Chancellor Ludwig Erhard, was a barbecue catered by Walter Jetton in December of 1963.

The word barbecue or barbeque comes from the word barbacoa, a Caribbean word meaning framework of sticks set on posts. It was first seen in print in 1526 in a dictionary by a Spanish explorer.

In 1959, the first BBQ competition in the US was held in Hawaii the year it became a state. Contestants submitted recipes by mail and the final 25 contestants and their wives were flown to Hawaii for the final cook-off event.
