EASTERN November Student of the Month Owen Morrison Owen Morrison, an Upper Moreland High School senior, is the November 2020 Student of the Month at Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) in Willow Grove. Owen is being recognized for his outstanding work in EASTERN’s Automotive Technology program. The Student of the Month Award is sponsored by EASTERN’s faculty, Joint Operating Committee and the Willow Grove Rotary Club to highlight student excellence, success an...d service. Ten students each year are selected for this honor. Owen’s father and brother work in the HVAC field, so from a young age, Owen knew he wanted to work in a hands-on skilled trade. Because of his interest in cars, he visited both Automotive Technology and Collision Repair Technology during the 10th Grade Career Expo visit to EASTERN through Upper Moreland High School. Through EASTERN, Owen will shortly begin a paid internship at Infinity Faulkner in Willow Grove, where he will work several days a week during the time frame when he would typically be at EASTERN. His Automotive Technology Instructor, George Stahl, will work with his Infinity Faulkner Supervisor, Chris Bors, on grading his internship. Owen was also selected by his instructor to be the student representative from the Automotive technology Occupational Advisory Committee, a role in which he is encouraged to provide input on the program to enhance and improve curriculum. Industry-standard certifications that Owen has already earned through his EASTERN Automotive Technology program are the Safety and Pollution Prevention (S/P2), and several Valvoline certifications including Automotive Chemicals 101, Automotive Fluids 101, and Motor Oil 101. At Upper Moreland High School, the majority of Owen’s classes are honors-level. Owen understands the value of career and technical education, said George Stahl, EASTERN’s Automotive Technology Instructor. He has pride in his work and is enthusiastic about his future career goals. After graduation from Upper Moreland High School and EASTERN, Owen plans to participate in an 18-month training program at Infinity Faulkner and enjoy a successful career as an Auto Technician. More women are entering the construction industryin some places more so than others. Some of the fastest-growing jobs for women are in construction, according to an analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data by Smart Asset, New York. The third-fastest growing job on the publication’s 2020 list is construction manager, with 99,400 women in those positions last year, a 101% increase from 2015. Two additional positions within the top 10 are construction and maintenance painters, which saw a 64% increase to 53,300, and construction laborers, which posted a 50% rise to 71,800. https://www.ecmag.com//number-women-construction-industry-

EASTERN Alumni Spotlight: Ryan Purchase, Allied Health Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) Allied Health/Upper Moreland High School 2018 graduate, Ryan Purchase, is currently completing his prerequisites at Montgomery County Community College prior to entering into a Nursing program. With only two prerequisites left, Purchase plans to participate in the clinical portion of his education at Roxborough Memorial Hospital, as he aspires to become a Registered Nurse.... Purchase’s grandmother was a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) for over 20 years, and even earned her LPN through EASTERN’s Adult Practical Nursing program. He credits her for introducing him to a potential career in the nursing field. After a visit to EASTERN, Purchase knew that Allied Health was the opportunity he had been seeking. He was able to shadow healthcare professionals and learn about all the career pathways available in the healthcare field. Working in the medical field seems so rewarding and also presents you with new challenges every day, said Purchase. EASTERN helped prepare me for college. Although I have not yet reached the clinical portion of my schooling, I am feeling confident and ready because many of the concepts I already learned through EASTERN, such as taking vitals, moving a patient from bed to a wheelchair, and proper patient care. My ultimate career goal is to complete my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and start working in a hospital. The possibilities are endless. After completing my BSN, I may go on to other degrees within the medical field. There are so many opportunities available, and I am excited to see what else I am able to complete. Be sure a career pathway in healthcare is right for you! Allied Health is designed for students with rigorous academic preparation who plan to continue their education in college to prepare for a career in the health field. This program offers the potential of earning college credits at Montgomery County Community College at reduced tuition rate.
