As people begin to think about improving health behaviors in a new year it is important to make realistic behavior changes. Many of my patients want to increase their produce intake, which is great. But this behavior change is sometimes made too complicated or scary. For example, should people organic or conventional produce? Does it even matter?

With the holidays well underway I notice a very discernible difference between my patients who are maintaining their weight and health and those who are struggling. The difference between the two is that those who are doing well have done away with fear of food and diet culture ideas. They allow themselves to eat what they want and not feel guilty about any of it. Those who are struggling (and this does not mean they are failing or of lesser value) are still bullied by diet culture and afraid to eat foods that they believe are bad. In reality there is no good or bad food. And if somebody tells you that there is they are likely confused about nutrition. #fischernutrition #eatwellbewell #eatwellbewelllivewell #fuckdietculture #registereddietitian #allfoodsfit

There is no debating that fruits and vegetables are good for you. But there is debate as to which form s better, fresh, canned, or frozen. The truth of the matter is that eating any of these three versions is better than eating none. But there are certain variables that impact the nutrition content of the product. #fischernutrition #cannedfood #addmoreproduce #addveggies #eatwellbewelllivewell #justeatfood #justeat ... Variable 1 Was the product grown in nutrient rich soil and optimal weather conditions? The better of each scenario improves nutrition. Unpredictable weather patterns can impact nutrients. Variable 2 The nutrient content of the food depends on when it was harvested. If it was harvested at peak ripeness it will have the most nutrition. If it was harvested early to make it more durable for shipping it will not be as nutritious, but it is still a very good product. If it was harvested late it will also have less nutrition, and may not have the desired texture either. But it is still a great option. Variable 3 What happened after harvesting? If it was shipped from point A to point B the shipping time because time, light exposure, temperature changes, and damage to the product will decrease some of the nutrition. But still, it is a good thing to eat. Canned is typically done at peak ripeness. But high canning temperatures and storing it in a liquid will decrease the nutrient content through heat damage and leaching into the surrounding liquids. But again, the product is still quality. And if you eat the liquids of the canned food, for example tomatoes, you offset the nutrients lost to leaching. Freezing is typically done at peak ripeness. But when or if the product thaws some of the nutrients can be lost to water that is lost if it is not eaten. But again, still great to eat. Variable 4 You don’t eat any produce at all. In this case you get no benefits. So in the end, just picking any form is great, just eat them.

Doctor Anna has run out of coffee. I decided to make some homeopathic coffee instead. The result was not great. I suspect that the faux leather on the Bible is to blame...right? Sci Hard! - Doctor Anna

Before trying new diets I typically start patients with basic recommendations that are backed with sound science. This starts by helping patients build an eating pattern that is flexible, livable and better meets recommended nutrient needs, not a fad diet with rigid boundaries that makes too good to be true promises. And if someone tells you that they became unhealthy following recommendations....they were not following recommendations.

6 common problems preventing some people from eating healthy 1: People sharing misleading nutrition info: Science is complicated and requires education and experience to fully understand how to interpret and then apply the science to real life. This can make nutrition information confusing for the layperson and also easy to use the information to sell products. Ask a registered dietitian for help, we like talking about food. 2: Diet culture sucks: The common theme of diet ...culture is to find some way to control a person's food intake so that calories eaten is less their caloric output. This is the key to lose body fat. BUT diet culture uses not maintainable ideas and gimmicks to achieve large weight loss. Recommended health guidelines do not include extreme ideas and extreme weight loss is rarely maintainable. 3. People making body image or food comments: Many of my patients tell me stories about being a child and someone telling them something along the lines of, If you eat that you will get fat and never get a boyfriend. I cannot believe that I need to explain to people that this has never been and will never be appropriate on any level. This kind of language messes with people's relationships with their food, health, and their own worth. If you say things like this you are part of the problem. 4. Making food too complicated. Your body does not know if your meals took 3 hours to cook or you made the same sandwich you made for your kids and opened a can of green beans for lunch. Stop being so extra, you are not impressing anyone. 5. Not eating enough: This is common with fad diets and diet culture. Sure you will lose a lot of weight fast (mostly water, less fat) but ultimately hunger will lead to less optimal food choices and maybe overeating and guilt. I have never had a patient eat too little with good results, but all of my patients who eat enough (and not fear food) get great results. Oh, and they are not hungry. 6. Skinny does not mean you are healthy and being overweight does not mean you are lazy: The same way a painting composed of many brushstrokes and or colors, health and work ethics are composed of many factors and habits. Stop judging people based on your own biases. AND...physical health

There are a lot of non-nutrition professionals spreading misinformation. It is even more shameful when one of those people use their credentials (that are not nutrition related) to do so.
