Fleisher Art Memorial 01.06.2021

Don’t miss tonight’s talk with 2013 Wind Challenge artist Elizabeth Hamilton beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Zoom. Elizabeth is a multidisciplinary artist who received her MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She has exhibited at several museums and galleries including the Philip Muriel Berman Museum, the Delaware Contemporary, Cantor Art Gallery, the Woodmere Art Museum, and InLight Richmond at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. She has been awarded grants from the... Leeway Foundation in 2015 and 2017. She completed a residency at the Elsewhere Museum, and her work is in the collection of Drexel University, Harper College, the West Collection, and the MINI Museum. Join us tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. for a crash course in weaving and building a loom with household objects with teaching artist Stefanie Fuoco. Learn how to weave on the loom you’ll build and gain an understanding of core techniques. At the end of this online event, you’ll be able to create a weaving you’ll be proud to hang on your wall. Ready to start planning your summer? Before you do, visit fleisher.org/take-a-class/registration-information to download a copy of Freehand, which is brimming with nearly 80 six-week and shorter summer workshops for adults led by familiar and new teaching artists. We are thrilled that almost half of our summer offerings will be presented in person in Fleisher's studios and in exciting places such as South Philadelphia's FDR Park, the Wissahickon Valley, the Philadelphia Zoo, and along the banks of the city's waterways. On Saturdays, January 16 through February 13, young artists in grades 9-12 can join Marie Elcin to see the world through the eyes of an illustrator and learn to communicate visually through watercolor. Marie’s class will meet on Zoom from 12:00-1:00 p.m. All young artists, even if they have not made art with us before, can register for our Saturday Young Artists Program. The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage announced 41 grants today in support of Philadelphia’s artists and cultural organizations, and Fleisher is proud to be a 2020 grantee! Don't miss Fleisher From a Distance tomorrow evening as @claesgabriel will discuss the unique process he employs to create his bold sculptural paintings. With Claes, we'll explore building structural frames, stretching canvases on varied angles, and designing and painting the piece. Claes will also discuss his recent adventures in mural painting and his recent work, "Boat People," located at 47th Street and Woodland Avenue. Our Día de los Muertos celebration begins tonight as we welcome artist, filmmaker, activist, and educator @michelleangelaortiz to speak about the impact of activism in her art, life, and community. Beginning at 6:30 p.m., Ortiz will explore recent work that deals with immigrants’ human rights and encourages healing through storytelling. Daniel Tucker, the graduate program director in socially-engaged art at Moore College of Art & Design, will be tonight’s moderator.
