Gesu Alumni Feature! Congratulations to Asata ’17, who's been accepted to 30 colleges! Since her days as a Gesu scholar athlete in advanced writing classes and basketball, she’s continued to lead and succeed at Carver Engineering and Science. She’s earned a rowing scholarship to Villanova University, where she plans to prepare for a career in neuroscience or artificial intelligence. Gesu is so proud of her accomplishments! #GoingNova "Mrs. Randa and Mr. Gonzo have made a really big impact on who I am. They instilled a level of motivation and achievement that I need to excel. They taught that you need to be diligent and advocate for yourself all the time. I have always been motivated, but having teachers that care about your well being always makes the difference." Gesu middle school students are learning about perspective, vanishing points, and horizon lines in Ms. Hawkins’ art class. Their drawings capture the Gesu rooftop with the Church of the Gesu and our playground. Great job to these 7th grade artists: Brook’lin, Kamyah, and Morgan!

Gesu 3rd grade girls completed a week-long egg experiment and lab reports for science class. They soaked some eggs in vinegar and others in water, formulating hypotheses on what would happen to texture, color, and smell. They learned how calcium in egg shells breaks down and leaves a squishy yolk and a strong scent.

For Throwback Thursday, Gesu celebrates alumnus Michael Neal ’03, accountant and dedicated community volunteer. Michael has visited Gesu over the years to connect with students and teachers and in his former role with The Philadelphia Orchestra Association. He reflects: My experience at Gesu was more than learning in the classroom. Gesu gave me the opportunity to learn amongst children who looked and grew up just like me. This institution instilled within me life’s most powerful lessonwe all have the power to choose who we want to be in this life, and with effort, perseverance, and faith, our potential is limitless. I will forever be grateful to the many teachers and coaches who helped a young, insecure boy believe that he could be something greater.

On this day in 1964, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent resistance against racial prejudice in the United States. At today’s morning prayers, our Mission & Ministry department invited our Gesu community to reflect on how we can live Dr. King's legacy and promote peace and justice in our classrooms, our homes, our neighborhoods, and in our world.

Today is World Bullying Prevention Day! Gesu students are wearing blue shirts and engaging in class activities. 2nd graders in Mrs. Lamb’s class illustrated how they can be kind to others at home by helping to do dishes or take care of a pet. 4th Grade Girls Teacher Ms. Miller led a discussion in religion class on how students can serve God and others. The girls shared that they can donate clothes or toys and keep the community clean. Way to go to these young advocates for being people for others!
