Basic literacy in the religious traditions that people practice in our Republic is essential, not just for political commentators, but for all citizens. Mercyhurst students who have taken courses in our robust Catholics Studies program or courses such as American Religion in our Religious Studies programs are in a position to be better informed than some professional talking heads. "Ultimately none of these arguments gets at the real reason I, personally, chose to study religion back in late adolescence and then again in my 20s and 30s: love. It’s as basic as that. I loved thinking critically about and reading about and talking about religion, I wanted to keep doing it, and higher ed is where I could do it." We in the Department love what we do. And we share our love with our students. Students who major or minor in religion share with us this fascinati...on with learning about and understanding this very human (and often, from the outside, strange looking) human behavior we call religion. With so many institutions gutting their Religion programs, Mercyhurst remains a place where students can critically engage religion.
