Interesting service call today. The customer explained that their Better quality "Range hood was tripping the circuit breaker" and some of the kitchen counter top receptacles are not working. After a in depth investigation, I located the cause of the problem as pictured. It was determined that when the home was built, the electrician who installed the wiring hammered in a romex staple too tight and pinched through the outer and inner jacket of the cable. Strangely enough it t...ook 16 years for this problem to surface. You can see from the photo how this cable was arcing inside of the wall. This could have ended very bad for the home owners. Today's NEC requires Arc fault circuit protection on most of your interior residential house wiring today. However in 2003 it was not required. A arc fault circuit breaker would not have allowed this situation to come close to starting a fire.
