We’d like to thank our loyal and dedicated crew for a big surprise this week. 1361’s tender has been completely sandblasted and put into Works Gray. All with the support of volunteers and funding by the Emery Trust and Horseshoe Curve Chapter, NRHS. To be continued...

Special Statement May 15, 2020 From the Desk of Joseph A. DeFrancesco, Executive Director: As we rise to occasion to meet the challenges of COVID-19, we are looking forward the day we can get back to normal operations.... In the meantime, our employees are preparing us for the day we can open. We have adopted a plan to stage our opening gradually. We have not decided on a date at this moment. It will rely on the region of Central Pennsylvania going into the Green Phase of the Commonwealth’s color-coded reopening plan. When entering the Green Phase, we will announce the opening of the Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark. We can tell you we will not be operating 7 days per week at first. We will gradually extend our hours to meet the demands of our visitation. When we open, our staff and visitors will follow social distancing and CDC/Department of Health guidelines. The process of shutting down businesses and reopening them are very delicate manners. Both actions require the museum to conserve its resources. Due to the nature of the CDC guidelines and the level of interactive displays at the Railroaders Memorial Museum we will be opening the museum at a later date than the Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark’s reopening. We are working with our event partners to best serve you. Event alterations will be announced. We will announce all updates as information becomes clearer in the coming days. We wish you and your loved ones the best of health. Please consider buying a membership to help us weather this storm. Thank you for your support! Joe

In erecting shops, blacksmith shops, foundries in seemingly endless train yards generations of Altoona men and women worked to create the Standard Railroad of the World. Help keep their stories alive by purchasing a copy of Altoona at work. https://www.railroadcity.com/
