York County wrestler adds to his Hollywood story; Marine Corps Staff Sergeant John Stefanowicz became an #Olympian! The #KennardDaleHighSchool grad John Stefanowicz ran the toughest road to become an Olympian. He wrestled in High School, but never qualified for a state tournament. After graduation, he chose to join the #UnitedStatesMarineCorps because college wasn't the option for him. Though just the No. 4 seed at the #USOlympicTeamTrials, SSgt Stefanowicz took down each fa...vored opponent. SSgt Stefanowicz, 29, won three matches before defeating #JoeRau, twice. SSgt Stefanowicz cemented his spot on #TeamUSA in the Greco-Roman style in the #192poundweightclass. He will wrestle in the #TokyoOlympics this summer! SSgt Stefanowicz's unlikely ascent to Olympian actually did begin around the farm fields of #SouthernYorkCounty, leading his younger brother in workouts growing up. He joined the #Marines out of high school, put on 70 pounds and got back into wrestling. He succeeded, in part, because of a fierce willpower. SSgt Stefanowicz had to move up a weight class to accomadate Olympic Weight Classes, and stunned onlookers, first by beating the No. 2 seed #AlanVera, then was awarded victory over the No. 3. He finished by upsetting Rau, the 2016 Olympic Trials champ. SSgt Stefanowicz is an #IntelMarine and continues studying to complete his college degree and help raise two children. "Just adversity and having enough grit to get through it," Stefanowicz said in the USA Wrestling interview. "I’ve been dealing with it since I was a kid. It's one of the things, the more something breaks down, as long as you keep getting back up, it's going to make you stronger." He'll be the #FirstMarine team member to wrestle in the Olympics since 1992. "It feels so much bigger, seeing my team and my family and wife and brothers and sisters in the stands. I never thought I'd be here. I never thought in a million years I thought I’d wake up and say, 'I'm an Olympian... At this point, I feel unstoppable." On this day in Navy and Marine Corps History: On March 8th, 1965, Marines land in DaNang. The 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade (MEB) landed at DaNang, Republic of Vietnam as the first U.S. ground combat troops to be committed to that conflict. The 3,500 Marines arrived both across the beach with Battalion Landing Team 3/9, and at DaNang Airfiled with Battalion Landing Team 1/3. The 3,500 Marines were deployed to secure the U.S. airbase, freeing South Vietnamese troops up for ...combat. FEATURED STUDENT: Lance Corporal Gina M. Mentzer, from #Harrisburg, PA, is currently enrolled at the Naval School of Music to train as a musician in the U.S. Ma...rine Corps Music Program. Lance Corporal Mentzer graduated from Bishop McDevitt High School and performed in her high school wind ensemble, concert band, and choir. Her wind ensemble had the opportunity to perform at the state capitol for Music In Our Schools Month and toured the local elementary schools to showcase the ensemble while encouraging kids to play music. LCpl Mentzer also placed in the Pennsylvania Music Educator’s Association (PMEA) District Band, Orchestra, and the All-State Band. Outside of her high school ensembles, LCpl Mentzer performed in the Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestra and the American Music Abroad Burgundy Tour where she performed in Italy, Germany, and Austria. LCpl Mentzer studied with Beverly Butts of Lebanon Valley College and was recruited by RS Harrisburg/RSS Capital City Marines, 1st Marine Corps District. Over the course of the six-hour firefight, Meyer killed at least eight Taliban, personally evacuated 12 friendly wounded, and provided cover for another 24 Marines and soldiers. ... For his extraordinary heroism, presence of mind amidst chaos of death, and unselfish devotion to his comrades in the face of great danger, Meyer was awarded the Medal of Honor in September 2011. RSS Capital City Marines and their poolees conducted a hike today on the Victoria Trail Loop. At the midway point they had a competition to see which team could do pull ups, squad burpees, and squad push ups. Team one completed the challenge in 20 minutes and 30 seconds, team 2, came close, but did not complete the challenge faster than team 1. Great job today poolees!
