Announcing a new creative nonfiction spring workshop at the Lancaster Literary Guild: Days/dates: 6 Wednesdays, 3/18, 3/25, 4/1, 4/22, 4/29, 5/6 Time: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Location: Lancaster Literary Guild House, 113 N Lime St. ... Cost: $150 ($135 for seniors/students/veterans/LLG members) For: writers of all levels; enrollment limited to 12 Instructor: Jeremy Hauck (see bio below) Enroll @ [email protected] or call/text 937.728.3320 Do you have a good story to tell? (Now is the time to tell it!) Creative nonfiction, or CNF for short, has been called by Lee Gutkind the fastest growing genre in the industry. In this new workshop you will learn how to write the truth vividly, in a supportive, collaborative atmosphere. We will explore the genre through readings on the craft of creative nonfiction, in-class writing exercises, and critical discussion of classic essays by the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Wendell Berry, and Joan Didion. Each student will produce two original essaysa flash piece (under 750 words) and a longer piece (under 3,000 words). The first three weeks will be devoted to learning about the genre and creating a polished work of flash nonfiction. In the second half of the course, after a two-week break for writing, we will be workshopping our longer pieces. In the final class we’ll walk through the process of submitting work to literary journals, with special guest Donna Talarico, founder and publisher of Hippocampus Magazine. Meeting sessions will move briskly and feedback will be lively and constructive. You will be writing with the intent to create publishable, standalone pieces that engage the reader. Participants are also welcome to use this course to develop longer work they intend to use in memoirs or collections. Jeremy Hauck’s fiction, reviews, and nonfiction appear or are forthcoming in 100 Word Story, The Molotov Cocktail, Penduline Press, TINGE Magazine, Heavy Feather Review, The Review Review, the Ploughshares blog and others. He teaches writing at Temple University and Harrisburg Area Community College. In 2014 he led the area’s first flash fiction course at the Lancaster Literary Guild.
