COVID impacts Clarion jail population CLARION The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all aspects of life over the past year, including the Clarion County Jail which recorded its lowest average daily inmate population in nearly a decade. In his report during the Jan. 9 prison board meeting which also included a number of other end-of-the-year statistics Warden Jeff Hornberger explained that the Paint Township facility ended 2020 with an average daily population of 67 inmates..., a decrease of more than 30 inmates from 2019. Our average daily population really went down, Hornberger said of the 2020 statistics, noting that the jail capped 2019 with an average daily population of 101 inmates. Looking back even further, the average daily inmate population was 108 in 2017, 100 in 2014 and 75 in 2011. We’re below what we were many years ago. Damsels fall short of knocking off NC RIMERSBURG Close but not quite enough. The Union Damsels basketball team nearly handed North Clarion its first conference loss in six years, but in the end the She-Wolves were able to overcome 31 turnovers to pull out a 47-41 win in the much-delayed, highly-anticipated season opener for both teams Monday at the Dungeon.... The Damsels had North Clarion on the ropes when they took the lead for just the second time in the game and for the first time since 8-6 in the first quarter on a pair of Maggie Minick free throws with 6:22 to play. BC3 campus coming to Armstrong County KITTANNING Call it a late Christmas gift, or a great start to the new year either way, Armstrong County officials were celebrating news last week that Butler County Community College (BC3) will build a new branch campus in Ford City. It’s a pretty exciting moment, Armstrong County Commissioner Don Myers said as the announcement was made at the commissioners’ Jan. 7 public meeting. 2021 looks like it’s starting off good.... With state Sen. Joe Pittman (R-Indiana) and state Rep. Jeff Pyle (R-Ford City) on hand, Myers and fellow commissioners Jason Renshaw and Pat Fabian were joined by representatives from BC3, including college president Nicholas Neupauer. This is an exciting day for BC3 and Armstrong County, Neupauer said, noting the school’s three-decade affiliation with smaller locations in Armstrong County, including the present site in Manor Township. Munsee won't seek re-election CLARION After 12 years in office, it’s the end of an era for one Clarion County elected official. Clarion County Sheriff Rex Munsee said last week that he will not seek re-election for a fourth term in the 2021 election.... I always wanted three terms, Munsee said, noting that he was lucky enough to be elected for the first time in 2009 and re-elected two more times after. I’ve accomplished what I wanted to get done, and I have other things that I want to do. Knowing that law enforcement was his calling from a young age, Munsee served as a state police trooper for more than 27 years before deciding to leave the force to run for sheriff in 2009. Bain’s heroics lift Bulldogs past Karns City, 54-52 NEW BETHLEHEM For a team trying to flip a five-win season into something much better, last Saturday’s season-opening 54-52 couldn’t have been a better start. Taking a thriller from Karns City, the Redbank Valley Bulldogs got the winning basket in the final moments when Bryson Bain’s three-point play with 2.9 seconds left in the game was the game-winner.... That’s being mentally tough, Bulldogs head coach Emmanuel Marshall said. That’s something we’ve been missing here and I think this year we’ll be mentally tough, not only mentally, but physically. In the past, we used to get thrown around by Karns City, because they’re just so big and strong.
